DAAD Language Test | English

• You must be a current student or PhD candidate at one of the following Freiburg institutions:
  • University of Freiburg
  • Evangelische Hochschule
  • Katholische Hochschule
• You should be applying to go abroad for an internship / a research trip / a clinical clerkship / as an exchange student (e.g. Erasmus, BVMD, DAAD scholarship)

Please note that this test is not suitable for students applying for a course of study at Freiburg or who need proof of English skills to continue their course of study in Freiburg. Please see the list at the bottom of the page for alternatives.

Please book well in advance of your application deadline to avoid disappointment. At the busiest times of year (October-February), you may need to wait two weeks or more for the earliest available appointment.

We do not offer tests over the Christmas period (up to 6 January) or during the Whitsun/Pentecost week.

If you are a registered student at the English Department of this university, you do not need to make an appointment – please simply contact a lector who you have taken classes with, and ask them to fill out the DAAD form for you.

For everyone else, the following procedure applies:

Send an e-mail to daadsprachtest@anglistik.uni-freiburg.de providing the following information:

• reason for taking the test
• subject(s) you study
• which of the above Freiburg institutions you study at
• your application deadline

• Watch / listen to audiovisual materials in English;
• Read articles relevant to your subject in English;
• Chat to other people in English.

1. Your DAAD form (or equivalent), with your details already filled in where required – we will send you this form when we confirm your appointment
2. Photo ID

• You will be asked about your course of study and about your plans for your time abroad.
• You will read a short newspaper or journal article and answer questions about it.
• We will also ask you to write a short text on a particular topic relating e.g. to your studies, research project or future plans.
• The test takes roughly half an hour.
• You will receive your results and completed certificate at the end of the test.

You will be tested by one of the English Department’s lecturers for English Language Practice.

You will be assessed according to the criteria on the test form you bring with you (DAAD, BVMD etc.) – these forms allow different assessment levels for different skills (speaking, reading comprehension, writing). The examiners will assess and evaluate your performance according to the CEFR descriptors on the form.

It is YOUR responsibility to ensure you have worked to achieve the level of English you need for your application. Do not ask your examiner to certify a level that you have not performed at.

If your result is not what you were hoping for, you will need to take steps to improve your skills by e.g. taking a course in English (e.g. at the University’s Sprachlehrinstitut) or through dedicated self-study. For this reason, you need to wait at least six months before applying to take the test with us again.

Since we have only limited test capacity available, we do not offer tests to candidates not covered in the section above „Who can take this test?“ You will need to investigate other test facilities, especially if you are applying for admission for a course of study at the University of Freiburg.
