How can I prepare for the test?

What do I need to bring to the test?

  1. Your DAAD form (or equivalent), with your details already filled in where required – we will send you this form when we confirm your appointment
  2. Photo ID

What happens during the test?

Who will be testing me?

You will be tested by one of the English Department’s lecturers for English Language Practice.

What test result will I get?

You will be assessed according to the criteria on the test form you bring with you (DAAD, BVMD etc.) – these forms allow different assessment levels for different skills (speaking, reading comprehension, writing). The examiners will assess and evaluate your performance according to the CEFR descriptors on the form.

It is YOUR responsibility to ensure you have worked to achieve the level of English you need for your application. Do not ask your examiner to certify a level that you have not performed at.

What if I am dissatisfied with my test result?

If your result is not what you were hoping for, you will need to take steps to improve your skills by e.g. taking a course in English (e.g. at the University’s Sprachlehrinstitut) or through dedicated self-study. For this reason, you need to wait at least six months before applying to take the test with us again.

What if I am not a current student at one of the institutions named above, or I need the test for another purpose?

Since we have only limited test capacity available, we do not offer tests to candidates not covered in the section above „Who can take this test?“ You will need to investigate other test facilities, especially if you are applying for admission for a course of study at the University of Freiburg. These facilities are listed below:
