GenAI & Me: Creative Computing and Emancipatory AI

Human Rights Research Consortium (HRRC)

Since 2019, the state of Baden-Württemberg and the U.S. state of Connecticut have jointly supported the Human Rights Research Consortium (HRRC)—a transatlantic initiative dedicated to interdisciplinary human rights research. One of its flagship outreach projects, GenAI & Me: Creative Computing and Empowering AI, was developed by NEXUS Experiments and Wonderful Idea Co.

The journey began on November 19, 2024, when NEXUS Experiments and Ryan Jenkins—director of Wonderful Idea Co. and creative educator—launched the first collaborative workshop. This session brought together researchers and teachers to co-develop the educational framework, ensuring thoughtful design and sustainable learning outcomes.

Building on this foundation, this year from March 31 to April 2, 2025, a group of students from Pestalozzi Realschule participated in a three-day hands-on workshop series at three different locations across Freiburg. During these sessions, they experimented with generative AI tools, microcontrollers, and visual programming platforms, and built their own prototypes using simple materials.

Blending cutting-edge digital technology with everyday objects, participants designed interactive projects that bridged the digital divide and opened new perspectives. The workshops were designed to inspire teenagers—especially those from underrepresented communities—to harness AI-powered creativity for social equity, equal opportunity in education, and a passion for STEM subjects.

The highlight came on June 17 and 18, 2025, when HRRC members gathered for their 4th annual conference at the University of Freiburg, hosted at the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS). On the second day, GenAI & Me transformed the library room at FRIAS into an interactive exhibition, where the AI-powered graphic novels created by students were showcased. These works integrated facial recognition and generative AI elements, prompting reflection on ethical questions and inviting visitors to participate. The topics ranged from science fiction to pressing social challenges—a testament to the creativity and critical thinking of the young participants.

Looking ahead, NEXUS Experiments is committed to furthering the dialogue and strengthening communities and opening new pathways for meaningful engagement.
