The Centre for Security and Society (CSS) is an interdisciplinary, cross-faculty institution that consolidates civil security research at the University of Freiburg.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The CSS was founded in 2010. Its members include professors from seven faculties, and the current managing director is  Prof. Dr. Alexander Stolz<\/a>.  With research projects<\/a> having a funding volume of approximately 15 million euros since its inception, along with numerous publications<\/a> and networking activities, the CSS is today a leading player in European security research. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Research Topics<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Civil security and resilience, as well as related areas such as disaster protection and the impacts of technologies, are central societal concerns. Special attention is given to the opportunities, risks, and ambivalent aspects of modern security technologies, particularly in the digital realm. In light of global economic, social, and political changes, new vulnerabilities of states, societies, and individuals are also a focal point. Against this backdrop, projects and research at the CSS engage with these topics, often in cooperation with national and European partners.<\/p>\n\n\t<\/div>\n\n\n\n

In recent years, Freiburg has firmly established itself as an outstanding location for innovative security research on the European\u2014if not global\u2014research map. Beyond the university, key partners of the CSS include the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Crime, Security and Law<\/a>, and the Fraunhofer Institute for High-Speed Dynamics, Ernst Mach Institute.<\/a> Together with the research-intensive university, they create ideal conditions for transdisciplinary collaboration, which is essential for successful security research from both technological and societal perspectives.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
