Husemann Cup 2026

The fact that students, PhD candidates, researchers, trainees and staff from laboratories, workshops and administration are not only able to work, conduct research and study diligently, but are also capable of top sporting performances, was demonstrated once again on 23 July 2026 at the long-standing Husemann Cup. A total of 14 teams from the Chemistry Departments, the Faculty of Engineering (TF), the Freiburg Materials Research Centre (FMF) and the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) competed against each other in thrilling football matches – with the PSI’s ‘Ente Patties’ team ultimately prevailing in a dynamic final against the ‘Vollphosten’ team from the Jessen Research Group. Congratulations on a well-deserved victory! As is tradition, the winning team is responsible for organising the next tournament – so we’re already looking forward to the next event!

Origins of the tournament

The Husemann Cup has a long tradition: it was originally established by Professor Elfriede Husemann. Incidentally, this chemist was the first female professor at the University of Freiburg and succeeded Hermann Staudinger as Director of the Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry. The tournament grew out of the idea that undergraduates and PhD students could show the professors on the pitch: ‘We are the bosses here!’

Following her death, Husemann arranged for the tournament to be funded from her estate. The event now relies on external sponsors.
