The binational Master\u2019s program Sustainable Materials: Polymer Science<\/em> is an International Master programme in Polymer Science (IM-PolyS) offered jointly by the Universit\u00e9 de Strasbourg and the University of Freiburg. It is interdisciplinary, positioned between the Departments of Chemistry <\/strong>and Engineering<\/strong>, and provides advanced methodological and practical skills in polymer chemistry, materials science, and engineering. Graduates are qualified for research and development in the field of polymeric functional materials and polymer technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After a solid teaching and research training education on macromolecular chemistry<\/strong>, polymer technology<\/strong> and materials applications<\/strong>, the students select their subject of specialization from a range of elective and specifically designed modules, allowing them to develop deepened understanding in topics related to polymer materials sciences<\/strong>, environmental sciences<\/strong>, bio\/life sciences<\/strong>, soft matter nanotechnology <\/strong>or microsystems engineering<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The curriculum is balanced by the inclusion of specific modules on sustainability and industrial polymer science. A particular application component can be implemented by performing suitable research internships or even a master thesis in the industry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first semester takes place in Strasbourg, the second semester in Freiburg. Semesters three and four can be completed at either university and include project-based modules, research internships, and the master\u2019s thesis. Language courses, intercultural seminars, and industry internships complement the international, practice-oriented curriculum.<\/p>\n\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

\n\t\n\t\t\n\t\t\n\tchevron-down<\/title>\n\t\n<\/svg>\n\n\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\tWhy study Sustainable Materials – Polymer Sciences in Freiburg (and Strasbourg)?<\/strong>\t\t<\/span>\n\t<\/button>\n\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\n

Freiburg is the birthplace of polymer science with the Nobel Laureate Hermann Staudinger, who received the Nobel Prize for the discovery of macromolecules in 1953. Ever since, polymer science has played a key role in the strategic development of the university and it has been strengthened through the founding of the Faculty for Engineering and most importantly the Departments of Microsystems Engineering (IMTEK) and Sustainable System Engineering (INATECH), which are also strategic partners in this interfaculty study program. Close ties also exist between chemistry, biology, physics, engineering and environmental science, which allows to add further teaching, training and research facets to realize this interdisciplinary study program. The university of Freiburg has excellent facilities for polymer-based materials research. Already for more than 30 years, the Freiburg Materials Research (FMF) Center provides a platform and hub for interdisciplinary and interfaculty materials research. This has most recently been complemented by the Freiburg Institute for Interactive Materials and Bioinspired Technologies (FIT), which serves to research and develop the next generation of bio- and even life-inspired materials systems. Close ties also exist to the recently funded DFG Cluster of Excellence liv<\/em>MatS (Living, Adaptive and Energy-Autonmous Materials Systems). Together with the various Fraunhofer Institutes, which are focusing on application-oriented research, and the close interaction with industry located in the trinational high-tech triangle of the Rhine Valley, the University of Freiburg has created a powerful platform in research and teaching, meeting the exciting challenges of sustainable development of new materials, systems and technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The international track together with the University of Strasbourg strengthens the exposure to other high level academic research institutes and adds a particularly interesting intercultural component to the study program.  <\/p>\n\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

Innovations and progress in polymer research are important pacemakers for modern technologies, enabling high quality of life and rendering high-tech products available for everybody. In contrast to metals and ceramics, polymers combine low weight with facile and low energy processing, possess extraordinary versatility regarding tailoring of property profiles, as well as efficient utilization of raw materials and recycling \u2013 all of which is combined with a broad spectrum of applications and with the ability for easy system integration. As such, polymer science takes a key role in modern materials research and connects the natural science disciplines of chemistry and physics with polymer and microsystems engineering on the technological side. It provides excellent career prospects in a highly innovative future field of science, technology and industry of modern materials and system research as well as applications in technologies. This includes qualified positions in the chemical, plastics, materials, bio-\/life science and biotechnological industry, as well as at governmental bodies and research institutes. There is a high demand in the industry for university graduates with qualifications in polymer science and technology, and with a knowledge on a sustainable development of our future materials-based society. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
