We combine rigorous economic analysis with advanced mathematical modeling and numerical simulation methods to address some of the most pressing issues of our time. From climate change and financial market dynamics to the design of optimal fiscal policy, our research tackles complex, real-world challenges.

During the week of June 29 to July 3, several team members presented their current research at leading international conferences. Marten Hillebrand gave the paper Climate Policy and International Risk Sharing<\/a> at the World Congress of Environmental and Resource Economists<\/a>, held at the NOVA School of Business and Economics<\/a> in Carcavelos, Portugal. Markus Epp and Marius J\u00e4ger presented their current research on Climate Policy and International Risk Sharing<\/a> and Rare Earth Criticality in a Production Network Model at the 32nd International Conference on Computing in Economics and Finance, hosted by Ca\u2019 Foscari University of Venice in Venice, Italy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2026 | Two Teaching Awards for the Macro Chair<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

We are excited to share that two of our courses from the Winter Semester 2025\/26 have received teaching awards from the Student Council (Fachschaft WiWi)!
Advanced Macroeconomics I<\/strong> was awarded \u201cBest Compulsory Lecture in the Master of Economics Program,\u201d<\/strong> and our Master\u2019s Seminar Topics in Macroeconomics II<\/strong> received the award for \u201cBest Seminar in the Master\u2019s Program.\u201d<\/strong>
The award ceremony took place on June 26 and was beautifully organized by the Student Council (Fachschaft WiWi).
A big thank-you to our students for their positive feedback and support. It means a lot to all of us, and we are incredibly honored to receive this recognition. We are very grateful for this appreciation and look forward to continuing to work with such engaged and motivated students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2026 | Freiburg Renewable Energy Day 2026<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

On June 8, all team members participated in the Freiburg Renewable Energy Day 2026<\/a> conference where they presented posters on their current research on Climate Policy and International Risk Sharing<\/em><\/a>, Rare Earth Criticality in a Production Network Model<\/a>, and Using Neural Networks to Compute Optimal Carbon Taxes in Economic Models of Climate Change<\/a>. Or<\/em>ganized by the Center for Renewable Energy (ZEE) <\/a>at the University of Freiburg, the event brought together scholars working in the field of energy and the environment for a day of inspiring discussions and knowledge exchange. Special thanks to Prof. Moritz Diehl and his team for the excellent organization.<\/p><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\t<\/div>\n\n\n\n

2026 | Prof. Hillebrand joins Board of ZEE<\/strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Professor Hillebrand has been elected as a new member of the Board of Directors of the Center for Renewable Energy (ZEE). The Center plays an important role in advancing dialogue and fostering collaboration among researchers and departments at the University of Freiburg working on sustainable energy solutions. Professor Hillebrand looks forward to contributing to the Center\u2019s important mission of advancing renewable energy research and supporting a more sustainable future.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n

2026 | New Working Paper by Markus Epp and Marten Hillebrand<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The working paper “Climate Policy and International Risk Sharing<\/a>” by Markus Epp and Marten Hillebrand is now available! The paper derives cooperative and non-cooperative climate policies in a multi-region model of climate change under different scenarios, investigating the interaction of international market arrangements with carbon pricing. We use our theoretical results to quantify the welfare gains of capital trade, financial markets and of climate policy cooperation. The manuscript can be downloaded here<\/a>.<\/p><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\t<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Our second workshop \u201cMacroeconomic Perspectives on Climate Change\u201d (jointly organized with Tilburg University) took place on May 22 at the University of Freiburg.

Once again, it was a wonderful and truly memorable event. We would like thank our great colleagues Simon Dietz, Stephie Fried, Aleksandra Friedl, Christoph Hambel, Conny Olovsson, and Christian Traeger for their excellent presentations, the engaging discussions, and the enjoyable social moments! We look forward to continuing this exchange and seeing everyone again in the future.<\/p><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

We are thrilled to announce that the lecture Advanced Macroeconomics I<\/a> from the winter semester 24\/25 has been awarded the “Best Compulsory Lecture in the Master of Economics Program” by the Student Board (Fachschaft WiWi) in recognition of its outstanding teaching quality. As part of his sabbatical term, Marten Hillebrand spent the entire April as a research visitor at Tilburg University. During his stay, he also gave a research talk presenting the paper “International Climate Policy and Risk Sharing” (joint work with Markus Epp). He would like to thank the Department of Econometrics & Operations Research<\/a> at Tilburg for the wonderful opportunity to discuss research ideas and the potential for future cooperation and collaboration in a most stimulating academic environment. The exchange of ideas and feedback notably on the economics of climate change was immensely valuable and will contribute significantly to our ongoing and future research agenda.<\/p><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\t<\/div>\n\n\n\n

From March 18 to 27, Marten Hillebrand and Marius J\u00e4ger went for a research visit to Vietnam to attend a workshop on “Institutions, Inequality, Climate Change, and Migration” organized jointly by Fulbright University and the World Bank. During their visit, they also had the privilege of engaging with local researchers and Marten Hillebrand gave a lecture on “Macroeconomic Models of Climate Change and Optimal Climate Policy” attended by students at Fulbright University.<\/sup><\/p><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Overall, the research visit and workshop in Vietnam were immensely rewarding experiences and the knowledge and insights gained will contribute positively to our ongoing projects and initiatives on the economics of climate change. We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to our hosts in Vietnam for their warm hospitality and generous support throughout our visit. Their kindness and hospitality made our stay memorable, and we are truly grateful for the opportunity to engage with the local research group and experience the beauty of Vietnam.<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\t<\/div>\n\n\n\n
