The University of Freiburg has achieved top results in the CHE Ranking 2025 in the subjects of electrical engineering and information technology, education, German studies, psychology and environmental engineering. The ranking by the Centre for Higher Education Development (CHE) presents facts about the areas of study, teaching and research, such as the number of doctorates per professor or support for new students, as well as student evaluations. In the current ranking, the CHE has published results for six subject groups, including “Health, Sports and Psychology,” “Technology and Construction,” and “Language and Culture.”

Students rate the way their studies are organised very highly

Students at the University of Freiburg rate the organisation of their studies as very good across a range of subjects. Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, Education, Psychology and Environmental Engineering are listed in the top range (3.8 to 5 stars) with ratings of over 4 stars in this indicator. Students of educational science and environmental engineering also awarded more than 4 stars for the criteria “support from teaching staff” and “support during their studies,” which means that these subjects also rank in the top range in these criteria.

Top rankings also for fact-based indicators

The subject of German studies also ranks among the top performers in terms of support for first-year students.

About the CHE Ranking 2025

The CHE ranking enables a comprehensive comparison of colleges and universities in numerous subjects. The subjects examined in the ranking are re-evaluated every three years. The factual indicators are presented in ranking groups (top, middle and bottom groups). Student evaluations are represented in the form of star ratings. Five stars represent the best rating and one star the worst. A minimum of 3.8 stars must be achieved to be included in the top performers group. A total of approximately 120,000 students were surveyed for the CHE Ranking 2025.
