Information on Media Reports Regarding Allegations Against a University of Freiburg Employee

The University of Freiburg wishes to comment on recent media reports regarding allegations against a building management employee. In view of the serious nature of the allegations, the University leadership considers it important to provide its own account of the incidents and put them into context.
We would like to clarify that, contrary to reports, the University of Freiburg was not already aware of the allegations in early 2025. The first complaints regarding the employee’s conduct did not reach his direct superior until the end of March 2026, whereupon the superior requested further details. When the full extent of the allegations became known in early April 2026, the Division of Human Resources informed the responsible member of the Rectorate on the very same day. The University immediately initiated both the necessary measures under employment law and a comprehensive investigation into the matter. Investigations are also being conducted by the public authorities, and their findings will be taken into account in the University’s further assessment.
As a means of protecting those involved and in accordance with statutory data protection requirements, we are bound by guidelines regarding personnel matters and ongoing proceedings. We are therefore unable to issue a more comprehensive public statement on the specifics of the matter.
One thing is clear: The University of Freiburg firmly condemns all forms of discrimination, racist or sexist remarks, and physical violence. Such behaviour is fundamentally at odds with our values and our commitment to a safe campus. In our dealings with all those involved, we strictly adhere to applicable law.
