Results of the University Elections 2026

Freiburg, 31/07/2026

Students and enrolled doctoral candidates have chosen their representatives for the Senate and the faculty councils.

In the 2026 university elections, held online from 9 to 15 July 2026, University of Freiburg students and enrolled doctoral candidates elected their representatives for the Senate and the faculty councils. Student Council elections were held at the same time. The official results are now out.

The students elected the following representatives to the Senate:

  • Josefine Krasenbrink (Departmental Student Committee List)
  • Johannes Schwarz (Young Socialists Student Organization)
  • Jule Reinauer (Departmental Student Committee List)
  • Alexander Angelov (RCDS – The Centre)
  • Jule Peerenboom (Young Socialists Student Organization)

The enrolled doctoral candidates elected the following representatives to the Senate:

  • Johanna Trefs („Banana“ List)
  • Fabian Lex (Fabian Lex List)
  • Daria Petrovska („Banana“ List)

Voter turnout was 5.3 per cent overall. Turnout among students was higher than among enrolled doctoral candidates, at 5.6 as opposed to 3.4 per cent. Compared to the previous two years, voter turnout declined (2025, students: 7.7 per cent, enrolled doctoral candidates: 4.6 per cent; 2024, students: 11.2 per cent, enrolled doctoral candidates: 6.9 per cent). Interest in standing for election was also lower. The student and enrolled doctoral candidate representatives will serve one-year terms of office starting on 1 October 2026.

The Senate represents all areas of the University. It is the university’s only central organ that, aside from members by virtue of their office, is composed of directly elected representatives of the various groups of university members. The elected members include 22 professors, 5 representatives of non-tenured academic staff, 5 students, 3 doctoral candidates, and 5 administrative and technical employees. The rector, the head of administration, and the faculty equal opportunity representative are voting members by virtue of their office. The other members of the Rectorate and the deans are non-voting members by virtue of their office insofar as they are not elected members.

New members were also elected to the faculty councils. At faculty level, the faculty councils perform a role similar to that of the Senate for the entire University. At the Faculty of Economics and Behavioral Sciences, however, the seats reserved for students and enrolled doctoral candidates could not be filled because no nominations were submitted.

Detailed election results are available on the election platform. Please log in with your university account.

Student Council elections were held parallel to the university elections. Here, the students and enrolled doctoral candidates elected their representatives for initiatives and their departmental representatives in the Student Council.
