Results of the University Elections

Freiburg, 04/07/2025

Students and enrolled doctoral candidates have chosen their representatives for the Senate and the faculty councils.

In the 2025 university elections, held online from 24 to 30 June 2025, University of Freiburg students and enrolled doctoral candidates elected their new representatives for the Senate and the faculty councils. In addition, teaching staff from the Faculty of Theology and service, administrative, and technical employees from the Faculty of Medicine were called upon to vote in by-elections. The official results are now out.

The students elected the following representatives to the Senate:

  • Jon Pfister (Young Socialists Student Organization)
  • Sophie Könnemund (Young Socialists Student Organization)
  • Julia Heimlich (Departmental Student Committee List[DH1] )
  • Max Florian Petzold (Departmental Student Committee List)
  • Josefine Krasenbrink (Departmental Student Committee List)

The enrolled doctoral candidates elected the following representatives to the Senate:

  • Daria Petrovska (joint nominee of the doctoral candidate representatives in the Senate and the GAA)
  • Brendan Dylan Wouterlood (joint nominee of the doctoral candidate representatives in the Senate and the GAA)
  • Louis Ehmann (joint nominee of the doctoral candidate representatives in the Senate and the GAA)

Voter turnout was 7.4 per cent overall. The turnout among students was higher than that among doctoral candidates, at 7.7 as opposed to 4.6 per cent. Compared to last year, however, turnout was clearly lower (2024, students: 11.2 per cent; enrolled doctoral candidates: 6.9 per cent). Interest in standing for election was also lower. Parallel to the 2025 university elections, faculty council by-elections for teaching staff of the Faculty of Theology and service, administrative, and technical employees of the Faculty of Medicine were also held. These by-elections were necessary because seats in the respective faculty councils had become vacant due to changes in personnel during the current term of office.

The Senate represents all areas of the University. The student and enrolled doctoral candidate representatives will serve one-year terms of office starting on 1 October 2025. The members of the Rectorate, the deans of the faculties, and the Equal Opportunity Representative for Academic Staff and Students also have seats in the Senate by virtue of their offices. In addition, the legal adviser to the Rector and one representative of the student government participate in sessions of the Senate.

The function of the faculty councils for the faculties is similar to that of the Senate for the entire University. Four to eight members each were elected to the faculty councils in these elections.
