Chemistry is the science behind reactions – from quiet changes to loud bangs and funny smells. As a largely experimental science, chemistry connects theoretical concepts with hands-on laboratory work. It focuses on the structure, properties and targeted conversion of substances – from single molecules to complex materials.
In the polyvalent dual major bachelor's degree programme in Chemistry, students acquire in-depth knowledge in the three central areas: organic chemistry (carbon compounds), inorganic chemistry (chemistry of the remaining elements and their compunds) and physical chemistry (theoretical models and methods). The programme is supplemented by insights into the elective areas of macromolecular chemistry (e.g., plastics) and biochemistry (chemical processes in living cells). In addition to a solid theoretical foundation, the focus is on practical lab work.
The polyvalent dual major bachelor’s programme offers two different options.
The “secondary-school teaching degree option” (with the subsequent programme “Master of Education”) prepares for a career in teaching. When pursuing this path, in addition to subject-specific content, the main course of study also consists of courses on teaching methodology and subject-specific teaching methods, which are designed to convey fundamental aspects of future teaching activities.
When choosing the option “individual study design”, students can tailor their studies to focus on specific areas of interest.
Career perspectives
Depending on the chosen option, the degree programme provides a sound basis for career paths in both science and education.
When choosing teaching-related courses, students can opt for a Master of Education after their Bachelor's thesis (in one of the two main subjects) and then qualify for a “Referendariat” (practical training phase for teacher education) – and thus for a position in secondary schools. Since teachers in the field of natural sciences are particularly in demand, students studying to become chemistry teachers have good prospects.
When choosing subject-specific courses, graduates can complete a research-oriented master’s programme, such as Biochemistry and Biophysics or Sustainable Materials. This opens up not only excellent prospects in business and research institutions, but also the path to a doctorate and an academic career. It is also possible to enter the profession directly, for example as a laboratory assistant.

It is possible to study music at the Freiburg University of Music. Make sure to inquire about the admission requirements Please inform yourself in advance about the admission modalities there. You can combine any teaching subject at the University of Freiburg with the artistic subject of music.
Please also note that it is not possible to be admitted as a student teacher with a combination of any of the following fields: Catholic theology, Protestant theology, Jewish theology, Islamic religious studies. It is not possible to combine one of these fields with philosophy/ethics either.
