Online application for enrolment
You can find the online application on the application portal . After entering your data on the online application form, please print out, sign, and submit the application to the Registration Office at the Service Center Studium on paper along with all other application documents.
1. Log in to the online application portal using your application login data.
If you applied via Hochschulstart, you must first link your application account with hochschulstart.de by entering the BID/BAN. For detailed instructions, please click here
2. After logging in, you will see your applications for admission to studies at the University of Freiburg along with their status.
If you applied for admission to a degree programme with restricted admission, to a higher subject-specific semester, or to a master’s degree programme, your letter of acceptancewas sent to your account mailbox. To access the online application, you must actively accept the admission offer.
If you applied for admission to a bachelor’s degree programme with open admission in the 1st subject-specific semester, you will be taken to the online application for enrolment without a letter of acceptance.
3. The system guides you step by step through the online application for enrolment. As soon as you have entered all of the data, you will receive the completed application for enrolment as a PDF.
4. Please print out the application form, sign it, and submit it along with all other documents required for your enrolment.
Required documents
You must submit additional documents along with your application for enrolment. Some of these documents are listed in your letter of acceptance. You can find the complete overview here.
Required evidence for enrolment
Please note that your enrolment can only be completed if you have submitted all documents listed below.
- Application for enrolment – complete online in the application portal, print out, and sign
- Printout of the letter of acceptance from your application account (only if you applied for admission to a subject with restricted admission, a higher subject-specific semester, or a master’s degree programme)
- Any further evidence specified in the letter of acceptance (e.g., language certificates) in the original or as officially certified copies.
- Original or officially certified copy of your higher education entrance qualification (will be returned). This is necessary even if you already uploaded a copy of your higher education entrance qualification when you applied for admission. German nationals who earned their higher education entrance qualification abroad must have it recognized by the Regional Administrative Authority (Regierungspräsidium) in Stuttgart.
- Evidence of German statutory health insurance coverage or an exemption from compulsory insurance (for those with private insurance). In both cases, this must be sent to us in electronic form by a statutory health insurance provider. For this purpose, please request ‘Meldegrund 10 für die Universität Freiburg’ from your chosen German statutory health insurance provider. The University’s sender’s number is H 0000099. We cannot accept your chip card/EHIC or a written certificate of coverage.
- Receipt of payment for the semester fee
- If you are required to pay tuition: receipt of payment for tuition
- Applicants for admission to the 1st subject-specific semester: evidence of participation in an online student orientation procedure, provided that you did not already submit it with your application. Applicants for admission to a master’s degree programme do not need to submit this evidence.
- If you are submitting your documents by post: a self-addressed return envelope with sufficient postage (for Germany: €1.80) in C4 format for the return of your original documents.
- Application for enrolment – fill in online on the application portal, print out, and sign
- Printout of the letter of acceptance from your application account (only if you applied for admission to a subject with restricted admission, a higher subject-specific semester, or a master’s degree programme)
- Any further evidence specified in the letter of acceptance (e.g., language certificates, placement certificate) in the original or as officially certified copies.
- Original or officially certified copies of certificates for examinations you have already taken (orientation, preliminary, intermediate, and final examinations) (will be returned).
- Disenrolment certificate/s from all German higher education institutions you have attended to date. The certificate should include information on your degree programme, subject-specific semester, number of semesters enrolled, period of enrolment, and date of disenrolment.
Important: an ex officio disenrolment certificate issued, e.g., due to a failure to re-register or a successfully completed degree programme is not sufficient.
- If you took a leave of absence at a German higher education institution: confirmation of study from the German higher education institution with a note regarding the leave of absence.
- Applicants for admission to the 1st subject-specific semester: evidence of subject-specific advising if you were enrolled in a degree programme at a higher education institution for at least 3 subject-specific semesters and wish to be placed in the 1st subject-specific semester at the University of Freiburg (does not apply to a completed degree programme).
- Original or officially certified copy of your higher education entrance qualification (will be returned). This is necessary even if you already uploaded a copy of your higher education entrance qualification when you applied for admission. - Application for a change of subject/degree programme. You do not need to fill in the application for enrolment in this case.
- Printout of the letter of acceptance from your application account (only if you applied for admission to a subject with restricted admission, a higher subject-specific semester, or a master’s degree programme)
- Any further evidence specified in the letter of acceptance (e.g., language certificates, placement certificate) in the original or as officially certified copies
- If you have a subject-restricted higher education entrance qualification: original or officially certified copy of your higher education entrance qualification (will be returned)
- Original or officially certified copies of certificates for examinations you have already taken (orientation, preliminary, intermediate, and final examinations) (will be returned)
- Receipt of payment for the semester fee, if you have not re-registered for the coming semester.
- If you are required to pay tuition: receipt of payment for tuition.
- Applicants for admission to the 1st subject-specific semester: evidence of participation in an online student orientation procedure (e.g., www.was-studiere-ich.de), if you did not already submit it with your application for admission. Applicants for admission to a master’s degree programme do not need to submit this evidence.
- If you are submitting your documents by post: a self-addressed return envelope with sufficient postage (for Germany: €1.80) in C4 format for the return of your original documents.
Semester fee and tuition
Your enrolment can only be completed if you have paid the semester fee and any tuition you owe.
Submitting your enrolment documents
You can apply for enrolment either in writing or in person. If you are unable to complete the enrolment documents or enrol in person (e.g., due to illness or absence), you may give a person you trust (e.g., a parent or sibling) power of attorney to do it for you. In this case, the written power of attorney must be included with your enrolment documents.
Enrolment periods
If you applied for admission to a degree programme with restricted admission, a higher subject-specific semester, or a master’s degree programme, the enrolment period that applies to you is printed on your letter of acceptance.
If you applied for admission to a bachelor’s degree programme with open admissions in the 1st subject-specific semester, please refer to the general dates and deadlines.
If you do not submit an application for enrolment (in electronic or written form) by the applicable deadline for enrolment, your admission expires automatically.
What happens after I submit the enrolment documents?
- If you have submitted the enrolment documents on time and the Registration Office has examined them, the status of your application in your application account changes to ‘enrolment in process’.
- If the documents are complete, the University of Freiburg has received the semester fee (and any tuition owed), and the M10 notification from your health insurance provider has been sent, you are enrolled by the Registration Office at the Service Center Studium.
- Upon enrolment, you will receive an informational email with important information about your university account and your university email address.
- Your enrolment becomes effective at the beginning of the semester.
After the University has received your documents, it may take several days for your enrolment to be completed. The time it takes depends on the enrolment period and on whether it is necessary to clarify anything about your application and whether it is complete.

After enrolment, you can retrieve your enrolment certificate yourself with your university account in the campus management system HISInOne.
