Evidence of health insurance coverage
The notification concerning your insurance status is sent digitally from the health insurance provider to the University of Freiburg (in accordance with Section 199a SGB V). If you are covered by a German statutory health insurance provider, please request ‘Meldegrund 10 für die Universität Freiburg’, this also applies if you are over 30 years of age and exempt from statutory health insurance. The health insurance provider sends the necessary information directly to the University of Freiburg in electronic form. Notifications on paper can no longer be accepted.
The University’s sender number is H 0000099.
If you have been exempted from compulsory insurance, e.g., because you have taken out private health insurance, you can choose freely which statutory health insurance provider to request the electronic notification ‘Meldegrund M10 für die Universität Freiburg’ from.
Students who switch their health insurance provider
To ensure that you do not encounter problems next time you re-register, we need electronic notification on your change of health insurance provider from your new health insurance provider (M11). Please contact your health insurance provider promptly – they will then send us the required notification.
International students
All newly admitted international students must contact a German statutory health insurance provider before enrolling – regardless of their current insurance status. The health insurance provider checks whether you have sufficient insurance coverage according to the legal guidelines and then sends the electronic notification M10 to the University of Freiburg.
Exemption from compulsory health insurance for international students:
Applicants from EU member states as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom who have a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) can present it to a statutory health insurance provider in Germany to be exempted from the additional insurance in Germany. Please contact a statutory health insurance provider before your arrival or go to one with your EHIC after your arrival in Freiburg and request the electronic notification ‘Meldegrund 10 für die Universität Freiburg’. You will not receive a paper document. The health insurance provider will send the necessary information directly to the University of Freiburg. Please also note the following: Under German law, you usually only receive medically necessary benefits with an EHIC.
Even if you are privately insured in your native country or have taken out a special private health insurance policy for your studies in Germany, you must still obtain confirmation from a statutory health insurance provider in Freiburg that you are exempt from compulsory health insurance. This also applies to recipients of DAAD scholarships who are insured through the DAAD. To obtain confirmation, contact a German statutory health insurance provider by email or in person and present your insurance documents. Request that the electronic notification (‘Meldegrund 10’) be sent to the University of Freiburg. You will not receive a paper document. The health insurance provider will send the necessary information directly to the University of Freiburg. The exemption from compulsory health insurance is binding for your entire course of study in Germany. This means that you may not decide to switch from a private to a statutory health insurance provider during your studies.
