To apply for and enrol in a course of study, you need to meet various requirements.

Which degree programme is right for me?

Start by exploring the different degrees you can earn – bachelor’s, state examination, polyvalent bachelor’s, or master’s degrees. Consider the financial and logistical aspects of studying and learn how to find out whether a particular degree programme requires any specific language skills or other specialized knowledge. It’s also essential to understand your own goals and interests.

Our general OSA for university studies provides you with an online tool designed to help you answer all of these questions.

What counts as ‘university entrance qualification’?

A university entrance qualification (Hochschulzugangsberechtigung – HZB) is a prerequisite for studying at a German institution of higher education. In most cases, you’ll need the general university entrance qualification (known as the Abitur). However, several other qualifications also allow you to enrol in university studies.

Common types of university entrance qualification:

  • German Abitur:
The Abitur is a ‘general university entrance qualification’, which the holder may use to apply for admission to any degree programme in Germany.
  • Subject-restricted university entrance qualification:
In this case, the certificate names particular degree programmes to which the holder may be admitted.
  • Qualification to study at a university of applied sciences:
Germany distinguishes between universities (Universität) and universities of applied sciences (Fachhochschule). Holders of a qualification to study at a university of applied sciences (known as the Fachhochschulreife) are only eligible to study at a university of applied sciences. However, if they pass an additional examination known as the Delta examination, they can apply for admission to bachelor’s degree programmes at all universities.
  • Master craftsperson:
With the title of master craftsperson or equivalent advanced training, you may also be eligible to apply for all degree programmes.
  • Vocational training:
With vocational training suited to your desired degree programme plus professional experience, you may also be eligible to apply after passing an aptitude test.

Important note

In other German federal states, the regulations are sometimes different (however, the general university entrance qualification/Abitur always applies), so before studying in another German federal state, you must enquire at the universities there to find out what requirements apply.
