Bright rooms, new floors and modern workspaces: between 2022 and 2026, the library in Collegiate Building IV at the University of Freiburg was refurbished in several phases. An opening ceremony was held in the refurbished library on 24 September 2026 following the completion of its modernisation. The project was supported by a US$600,000 grant from the Max Kade Foundation. The remaining costs were financed with funds from the state of Baden-Württemberg. The library remained largely open throughout the refurbishment work.

“Thanks to the funding from the Max Kade Foundation, the historic library in Collegiate Building IV now offers a brighter, more attractive and more modern environment for learning and academic work. On behalf of the University, I would like to express my sincere thanks to the Foundation and its President, Anne Doering, for their generous and valuable support,” says Prof. Dr. Kerstin Krieglstein, Rector at the University of Freiburg.

“This modernisation has strengthened the possibility of future encounters in a place where knowledge can be shared, questions asked and new ideas developed. It is a particular pleasure for us at the Max Kade Foundation to have supported this project. Our contribution is a sign of our connection with the University of Freiburg and an investment in the people who are learning, teaching and conducting research here, both today and in the future,” said Anne Doering, President of the Max Kade Foundation, in her speech at the reopening.

New standing desks, more sockets and a fresh coat of paint

As part of the refurbishment, the walls and ceilings were repainted, the floors were replaced and the ceiling lighting was upgraded with LED fixtures. The workstations were refurbished and supplemented with group benches and standing desks, as well as additional power sockets and table lamps. New curtains with a sun-reflective backing provide thermal insulation. In the reading room, the workstations have been rearranged, new shelves installed and the reception desk refurbished.

New seating areas are available in the entrance hall. The rotunda has been fitted with seating alcoves and a drinking fountain, whilst benches in the passageway leading to the lockers invite visitors to linger.
