International networking through multilingual services
Administrative processes also play a crucial role in ensuring the success of the University’s international engagement. Many international researchers, students and staff members first come to know the University through its services. The University of Freiburg is therefore constantly refining its processes and services for international exchange and fostering a genuine culture of welcome.
The Welcome Service and the Language Teaching Centre (SLI), for example, offer a wide range of services to staff and students. In this way, they make it easier for them to settle into university life and get settled in Freiburg. As a university with close international networks, the University of Freiburg is also committed to supporting its staff in teaching and research support roles in terms of language skills, subject knowledge and intercultural competence – the staff exchanges under Erasmus+ and the Staff Exchange within the Enhanced Partnerships offer opportunities to do so.
The Language Teaching Centre (SLI)
The Language Teaching Centre at the University of Freiburg offers customised language courses for students, researchers and staff. Its semester-long and subject-specific courses, as well as its winter and summer schools, help new students settle in at the University and prepare Freiburg students linguistically for studying at partner universities.
Start@UFR
The Start@UFR onboarding programme helps international researchers at all stages of their careers to settle in quickly at their new university and in Germany. The tailored sessions of the Postdoc Start Events provide postdoctoral researchers in particular with an overview of the German research system, career paths and key points of contact.
Erasmus+
Through the Erasmus+ staff exchange programme, staff members can learn about best practices in their field at partner universities across Europe, thereby furthering their professional development. Researchers can also travel abroad for teaching purposes and engage with colleagues in their discipline to strengthen existing partnerships or initiate new collaborations. The Erasmus+ Staff Weeks, in turn, bring colleagues from partner universities to Freiburg for professional exchange.
