Research
There is always something new to discover in nature, whether it be biodiversity or ecological processes. I find both aquatic and terrestrial habitats fascinating, which is why my research focuses on biodiversity, ecology and applied nature conservation.
Since ecosystems always consist of a multitude of organisms and the positive effects of biodiversity are widely known, but their mechanisms are not, I am researching functional diversity, i.e. the effects of functionally different characteristics of the same organism groups on their interaction partners. To this end, I analyse a dataset on pollinators (e.g. wild bees) and flower communities (e.g. knapweed and dandelion) from the Jena Experiment.
In another project, I am investigating diversity effects in subtropical forests. As part of my doctoral thesis, I had the opportunity to collect data on trophobiosis along a tree diversity gradient during several field trips as part of the BEF-China experiment. Trophobiosis is in most cases an interaction between ants and hemipterans (e.g. aphids, scale insects, cicadas, etc.). Since Hemiptera feed on plant sap from their tree hosts (antagonism) and ants in turn use honeydew from Hemiptera as food (mutualism or symbiosis), I am in the fortunate position of being able to study the effects of tree diversity on two successive trophic levels. Network analyses can be used to draw conclusions about how tree species diversity (or its decline) affects the stability of antagonistic and mutualistic interactions. Tree diversity may not be the only factor influencing these food webs. In order to gain a deeper understanding of the mechanisms involved, further studies will focus on the genetic diversity of trees and the use of pesticides and fertilisers in forests.

- Identifying and protecting wild bees as pollinators of cultivated plants
In addition to ants, I am also studying another group of hymenoptera, known as trap nest communities. These are solitary wild bees and solitary wasps that build their nests in reed tubes (insect houses or trap nests) and influence important ecosystem functions such as pollination and pest control. Since bees and wasps interact directly with the plants around them, losses in tree diversity could affect their species composition. Since all insects also have natural enemies, trap nests are always home to a variety of parasitoids (i.e. predators such as gold wasps, parasitic wasps, beetles, etc.). The resulting food web can in turn be examined for its stability against environmental influences using network analyses.
