Nutrition of bumblebees influences their pesticide resistance

How strongly bumblebees react to a widely used fungicide depends largely on which flowering plants it is used on and on how diverse the food resources are. In monocultures, the sensitivity to the fungicide can increase, which can have an overall negative effect on the health, development and reproduction of the bumblebees. These are the findings of an experiment conducted by our research team, led by Alexandra-Maria Klein and Dimitry Wintermantel.

Small natural habitats enhance the effectiveness of flower strips for pollinator conservation

To support pollinating insects throughout the year in agricultural landscapes, additional habitats are needed alongside flower strips. Near-natural small-scale structures such as ditches, embankments, hedgerows, or vegetated fences can provide valuable complementary habitats. As part of her doctoral research, Vivien von Königslöw studied insect species richness at the edges of apple orchards around Lake Constance, which had been enhanced with near-natural structures and flower strips to promote and protect pollinators

Improving habitats for pollinator insects

As part of the INTEGRA project, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL), a team led by Christopher Morhart and Thomas Seifert from the Chair of Forest Growth and Dendroecology is investigating how trees and shrubs on agricultural land can serve as habitats for pollinating insects. Among other things, Alexandra-Maria Klein and Felix Fornoff are examining the availability of flowers and nesting sites provided by different trees and shrubs.
