Curriculum Vitae
- Jürgen Bauhus has been Professor of Silviculture at the Faculty of Environment and Natural Resources at Freiburg University, Germany, since 2003. From 1996 to 2003 he worked at the Australian National University. His research focusses on dynamics and management of forest structure and composition, the ecological function of biodiversity as well as the adaptation of forests to global change. He published several books and more than 300 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters and is a highly cited researcher. For many years he has also been involved in policy advice, until recently as the chairperson of the Scientific Advisory Board on Forest Policy at the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture. For his scientific accomplishments, he received the scientific achievement award of the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) in 2014. He is the scientific director of the Future Forests Cluster of Excellence at Freiburg University

Research
I am a silviculturist and forest ecologist. The dominant, long-term pursuit of my research has been to generate a mechanistic understanding of the relationship between forest structure, composition, and function. In silviculture, we typically manage tree species composition and forest structure, which determine forest ecosystem functioning. The provisioning of forest ecosystem services, the major goal of forest management, flows from these functions. Therefore, scientifically based silviculture needs to have a thorough understanding of how to provide ecosystem services through manipulating forest structure and composition. My current major lines of research under this conceptual umbrella are:
- silvicultural options to increase the resistance, resilience and adaptive capacity of forests to global change; e.g. mixed species forests, tree species choices and assisted migration, stand density management.
- relationships between forest structure and biodiversity (e. g. retention of habitat trees and dead wood)
- post-disturbance management of regeneration processed, e. g. use of residual structures, control of invasive species, new establishment techniques such as irrigation
Teaching
In our Silviculture group, we are deeply committed to teaching as is evidenced by continuously very positive teaching evaluations of our BSc- and MSc as well as continuing education modules. Students appreciate the up-to-date content, high relevance and the close link between theory and practice, which we provide through numerous excursions and exercises. My teaching takes place in the following modules:
BSc:
- Waldbau – summer semester
- Angewandter Waldbau auf Grundlage von Waldentwicklungstypen – summer semester
- Restauration von Waldökosystemen und Waldumbau – winter semester
