Er studierte Deutsche und Englische Philologie in Bamberg, Edinburgh und G\u00f6ttingen (MA 1996, Dr. phil. 2000). Bevor er 2005 an die University of Toronto berufen wurde, war er seit 2000 Wissenschaftlicher Assistent an der Universit\u00e4t G\u00f6ttingen. Als Lynen-Stipendiat der Humboldt-Stiftung verbrachte er 2003-04 ein Forschungsjahr an der Cornell University. Er war Gastprofessor an der Universit\u00e4t Freiburg (Sommer 2008) und der Harvard University (January-July 2009). Seine Forschungschwerpunkt ist die deutsche Epik und Lyrik des zw\u00f6lften und dreizehnten Jahrhunderts. Dies hat auch in der Medi\u00e4vistik zu einschneidenden Ver\u00e4nderungen gef\u00fchrt, soweit sie sich auf r\u00e4umliche Praxen vormoderner Kulturen konzentriert und dabei vor allem die Kopr\u00e4senz als Voraussetzung von Macht oder die zentrale Rolle des K\u00f6rpers und seiner Sichtbarkeit einbezogen hat. Das Projekt f\u00fchrt diese \u00dcberlegungen weiter, indem es r\u00e4umliche Praxen in zentralen Texten hochmittelalterlicher deutscher Kultur untersucht. Es zielt auf eine Neubewertung dieser Kultur im Blick auf ihre Konzepte, Mechanismen und Praxen von Raum, Ort und Gegebenheit.
