Initial application – application documents for initial funding

We can only accept your application and pass it on to the Central Grants Commission if it contains all of the documents listed below. Please contact us in case of any questions before submitting your application.

The following application documents must be submitted until Thursday, 23 April 2026, at 1:00 PM:

I. One version as a PDF file via e-mail

and

II. One wet-inked signed printed version sent by post or submitted personally:

1. Application form personally signed by the applicant (including a wet-ink signature).
2. A copy of your certificate of acceptance as a doctoral candidate from your home faculty.
3. Description of your doctoral thesis proposal: maximum of twelve pages, including an account of your previous academic achievements and preperatory work for your doctoral project as well as a schedule and work plan.
4. Letters of recommendation from two university teachers, or other persons authorized to supervise doctoral studies. One of the recommendation letters must be written by your main supervisor. At least one of them must be a member of the University of Freiburg. The letters of recommendation must be personally signed . They can be submitted together with the application documents in a sealed envelope or sent separately by the supervisor.
5. Curriculum vitae (in tabular form).
6. A copy of your university examination certificates (intermediate examination certificates / bachelor’s degree certificate).
7. A copy of your university degree certificate that qualifies for a doctorate (master’s degree certificate or similar).
8. If applicable, a copy of any documents providing evidence of academic achievements, relevant experience and qualifications gained at or outside of the university.
