The Criminal Law Protection of Democracy and the Constitution in the Era of Digitalisation
Digitalisation poses significant risks to the preservation of democracy. In particular, the manipulation of public elections through deepfakes and social bots raises the question of whether such activities should be criminalised. At the same time, criminal policy must continue to meet fundamental requirements of the rule of law, even in the face of such new challenges. The conference on 19 and 20 June 2026 will present the results of a comparative legal study of 14 EU Member States and the criminal policy guidelines based on them.
