Research Funding
We strive to promote and advance research at Freiburg’s University Medicine in the face of international competition. To this end, the Office of the Dean for Research assists scientists in submitting their applications for internal, national and European research programs.
National Funding Programs
There are numerous research funding programs at national and state level. The Office of the Dean for Research can help you find the right funding program for your research project.

Research Funding EU & International
The European Union (EU) provides funding for research, technological development and innovation, primarily through its Framework Programme for Research and Innovation, currently known as Horizon Europe. In addition, various EU programs fund health-related research. The EU Office of the Faculty of Medicine supports you in applying for “Horizon Europe” calls and other European and international funding programs.
Internal Research Funding
The scientists are supported on their way to (independent) research projects by funding programs of the Faculty of Medicine and the University of Freiburg.

Foundations & Prizes
You can apply to the foundations of the University of Freiburg for funding in the form of travel grants, material grants and scholarships.
Awards of the University of Freiburg recognize outstanding achievements in various fields.
Network of University Medicine
The Network of University Medicine (NUM) has been funded by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space since April 2020 and enables the nationwide cooperation of all 37 German university hospitals and other project partners within the framework of cross-location and collaborative sub-projects in the field of clinical research.

Formal Application Requiring the Dean’s/Rector’s Signature
The Office of the Dean for Research is the first point of contact for all researchers at the Faculty of Medicine for all applications and questions. Project applications that require the approval of the Faculty of Medicine are submitted to the Dean of Medicine after prior review and, if necessary, to the faculty’s committees. All project applications that require the approval of the Rectorate are forwarded to the University’s Science Support Centre (SSC) by the Office of the Dean for Research after prior review and consultation with the faculty’s committees (Executive Board of the Faculty / Faculty Council).
Start-Up Funding
The aim of start-up funding is to support research projects at an early stage in order to enable these to qualify for further, more extensive third-party funding at a later date.
