Research Infrastructure Units and Networks

Research infrastructure facilities provide all faculty employees with access to key technologies that may not readily available to all users due to their high complexity and/or acquisition costs. At the same time, this eases the access to major research instrumentation for all interested researchers. Research infrastructure facilities differ according to their strategic importance, mode of operation, size of their user community, and funding structure.

Research infrastructure facilities at the Faculty of Medicine are categorized into three groups: Central, Core and Shared facilities.

Scientific and technical staff within the facilities handle inquiries and provide scientific services. For specific questions, please refer to the individual facility websites for a list of the relevant staff members.

Central Facilities

Central Facilities are of strategic priority to the Faculty of Medicine and the Medical Center – University of Freiburg. These are service facilities that have a large faculty-wide user community. There are three central facilities at the Faculty of Medicine:

Core Facilities

A Core Facility is strategically important for the research site in Freiburg and is consolidated and anchored in one or more institutes. Core Facilities are operated by individual institutes/divisions/clinics/departments or a group of professors with a common need for specialized equipment and/or technologies and research services. Close scientific and organizational ties between the Core Facilities and their host institutions are essential for the continuous and further development of the range of scientific methods and services.

Three Core Facilities have been acknowledged by the Faculty of Medicine:

The links in the blue boxes below will take you directly to the respective core facility:

Shared Facilities

A Shared Facility is operated by a group of interested scientists from single or multiple institutions, with the support of their respective institutional heads. Shared Facilities enable the collaborative use of major research instrumentation, methods or technologies by interested researchers.

Eleven shared facilities have been acknowledged by the Faculty of Medicine:

The links in the blue boxes below will take you directly to the respective Shared Facility:

Acknowledging Central, Core and Shared Facilities in Publications – Why is it Important?

It is crucial that you mention the use of our Central, Core and Shared Facilities in your publications. This acknowledgement is an important key indicator that helps the Research Infrastructure (RI) Facilities to develop and apply for funding to provide you with the highest expertise and state-of-the-art research infrastructure for your projects. Users of central, core and shared facilities of the Faculty of Medicine are therefore obliged to mention the facilities in official publications and presentations that contain data generated in these RI Facilities.

Important note: If the Central, Core or Shared Facility has made a significant scientific contribution to your research project (e.g. development of methods, design of new experimental setups or experiments, advanced data analysis, etc.), co-authorship of the publication may be justified.

Acknowledgement – But How?

In accordance with the recommendations of the DFG (Section 13.1), we kindly request that you use the following phrase to confirm the use and/or express support of an RI facility. The wording can of course be modified to include specific services used within the RI Facility.

We would like to thank the RI Facility [name of facility] of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Freiburg for providing services and instrumentation [if applicable] funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) – project number [project number].

RI Facilities Open Day

“A recap of the open day” on 29 September 2023

You can find the program here:

The Faculty of Medicine is delighted by the positive response to its first Research Infrastructure (RI) Facilities Open Day with over 60 participants. There were interesting presentations from the individual RIS Facilities, lively discussions in front of the posters and during the tours of the different facilities. The event took place on 29 September 2023 and was organized by the Administrative Division for Research Infrastructures and the RI Facilities.

Scientific Clubs

Depending on your interests and field of research, you will find below a few examples of scientific clubs with contact information.

Sonderline Hochschulmedizin Baden-Württemberg

As part of the “Sonderlinie Hochschulmedizin” (special funding line of the federal state of Baden Württemberg), we strive for close cooperation and continuous networking with the core facility platforms of the Medical Faculties of our Baden-Württemberg partner locations. The research infrastructures available for joint use and the range of services offered across locations are listed on the following pages.
