EPS-QEOD Prize 2026 for Research in Laser Science and Applications
Prof. Dr. Giuseppe Sansone
The European Physical Society (EPS) has elected Giuseppe Sanonse as one of the winners of the 2026 EPS-QEOD Prize for Research in Laser Science and Applications “for the development of coherent control schemes in the extreme ultraviolet spectral range and for the synthesis and application of controllable attosecond light pulses.”

Wilfried-Wurth-Prize of the DESY Scientific Council
PD Dr . Lukas Bruder
An international committee comprising experts from DESY’s Scientific Council has awarded the Wilfried Wurth Prize to Lukas Bruder of the Physics Institute. The prize offers the recipient the opportunity to conduct their research at DESY.

2025
Prize for Excellent Doctoral Supervision
Dr. Ulrich Parzefall
The University of Freiburg awards the prize for excellent doctoral supervision to recognize the outstanding commitment of supervisors. It was awarded for the second time in 2025 and is endowed with 2000 euros.

Bernstein-CorTec-Prize
Christian Follert
for outstanding scientific achievements in a topic relevant to Computational Neuroscience and Neurotechnology for his master’s thesis “Associative memory in self-organizing neuronal networks”.
Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Stefan Rotter, Bernstein Center Freiburg

Thomas Bayes-Nachwuchsförderpreis
Dr. Franz-Georg Wieland
Franz-Georg Wieland receives the Thomas Bayes Young Scientist Award, endowed with 5000 euros, for his doctoral thesis “Modelling complex and dynamical phenomena of systems biology, systems medicine, and sports science”.

ERC Advanced Grant
PD Dr. Petri Käpylä
has received a grant worth 2.5 million euros from the European Research Council for his work at the Institute of Solar Physics (KIS) in Freiburg. In the ‘NeoCon’ project, Käpylä is focusing on convection, the fluid motions in the outer parts of the Sun. The project aims at developing a solar observation-inspired subgrid-scale model that incorporates the effects of surface cooling in global simulations, thus enabling researchers to obtain realistic models of stars.

ERC Advanced Grant
Prof. Dr . Michael Moseler
is receiving €2.5 million in funding from the European Research Council for his work at the Fraunhofer Institute for Mechanics of Materials IWM. Moseler’s project is dedicated to researching and developing a digital twin for lubricants in highly loaded frictional contacts. The aim is to achieve greater energy efficiency in machines, devices, and vehicles.
