Jessica Imbach at Fudan University

On September 23, 2026, 11 am, Jessica Imbach will give a talk at the German Studies Department at Fudan University. The presentation explores the booming genre fiction industries of China and Germany within today’s commercialised media environment. Focusing on genres often dismissed as ‚feel-good literature‘ or shuangwen 爽文 (such as romantasy, BL, and sci-fi), Imbach argues that this boom is not merely an outcome of industry dynamics, but also reflects a heightened pressure towards becoming self-caring, resilient citizens.
