The City as a Laboratory – colloquium

As part of the colloquium “The City as a Laboratory” on 19 June in Freiburg, participants visited two inspiring sites of transdisciplinary learning: the WandelGarten in the Vauban district and the Weltacker at Mundenhof. These places turn the city into a living laboratory where questions of urban gardening, global agriculture, and sustainable food systems become tangible through direct experience.

A key focus of the visit was the exchange between different perspectives—students, university teachers, and practitioners—who jointly reflected on how knowledge is produced, shared, and translated into practice. Conversations in and around the garden beds and fields highlighted how transdisciplinary learning emerges through dialogue, shared observation, and collective engagement with real-world challenges.
