The Chair of Hydrology in the Faculty of Environment and Natural Resources is looking for a researche assistant position: “TurbidEye – Optical sensor for measuring microplastics in running water”
  • Bewerbungsfrist: 30.04.2021
  • Veröffentlicht: 06.04.2021

The position is funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy within the ZIM-project (“Zentrales Innovationsprogramm Mittelstand”) “TurbidEye – Optical sensor for measuring microplastics in running water”. The project is in collaboration with the Bergakademie Freiberg, the Mesolt Engineering Inc. and the New Direction Inc.. The position will be located at the Chair of Hydrology at the University of Freiburg, Germany.

Microplastic pollution in surface water bodies is an alarming environmental problem which needs to be addressed. The sampling of microplastics from surface water bodies is often performed via trawl sampling techniques and subsequent analysis in the lab. The aim of this project is to develop an optical measuring device for the in situ detection of microplastics in surface water bodies. The classification of microplastic particles will be carried out using artificial intelligence based on a deep learning algorithm. Via CCD camera imagines, the in situ sensor will be able to measure defined microplastic particle dispersions in the water body with different degrees of turbidity and a specially trained folding network (deep-neural network).

Applicants should hold a MSc degree (or equiv.) in hydrology, environmental science, engineering or a closely related field. Experience in conducting hydrological lab and field work, as well as knowledge in statistical data analysis are essential. We encourage applications from enthusiastic dedicated individuals with strong quantitative skills as well as good writing and communication skills in English and German. Candidates should be willing to conduct physically demanding field work, show team spirit, flexibility, high motivation and the ability to work independently.
