Who we are:

The Department of Microsystems Engineering (IMTEK) at the University Freiburg is one of the largest research institutes dedicated to microsystems engineering. The IMTEK Laboratory for Design of Microsystems is active in the field of energy harvesting and low power electronics, with a strong focus on environmental monitoring.

Your Task:

Within ECOSENSE you will be working on the development of hardware and software for an energy-autonomous sensor platform to monitor forest ecosystems and environmental parameters.

You will develop electronic power management systems for maximizing the energy harvested from solar and thermal ambient energy, using thermoelectric generators and photovoltaics in conjunction with rechargeable batteries. You will further develop a microcontroller system with operation software, as basic system for sensors and wireless communication systems to be attached. In a later project phase, you will develop intelligent algorithms to make these sensor nodes aware of their current and forecasted energy budget, so that they can schedule functions accordingly. Hardware and software must exhibit ultra-low po-wer consumption, to ensure operation over long periods of time, also with fluctuating/ low energy income.

We are looking for candidates (m/f/d) with a university degree (M.Sc.) in computer science, electronics engineering, communications engineering or a comparable subject.

Your qualification will cover several of the following areas:

  • Experience in microcontrollers programming (knowledge in energy-efficient programming, deep learning or artificial intelligence are of advantage)
  • Experience in electronics hardware design (knowledge in ultra-low-power design, DC-DC converter design and maximum power point tracking techniques are of advantage)
  • Practical skills in the design of embedded systems
  • Experience in computer-controlled lab equipment (e.g. LabView) and measurement equipment (power supplies, multimeters, oscilloscopes)
  • Good knowledge of Matlab, Arduino, Python or comparable software
