Supporting academic careers and offering researchers outstanding prospects: Under the umbrella of Academic Personnel Development, the University of Freiburg strives to provide good working and employment conditions and brings together offerings for the promotion of career development from various institutions and departments. The university has codified its support for excellent conditions for research, teaching, and qualification by drafting guidelines on the duration of fixed-term contracts for academic personnel and signing the European Charter for Researchers.
The „university’s human resources development concept for academic personnel“ [de] delineates the wide range of possibilities for development: The university supports researchers and teachers at all stages of their careers, from the doctoral and postdoctoral qualification phases to the professorship or another permanent position in academia. This involves providing comprehensive services for research and career support, for the extension of teaching skills, and for transdisciplinary qualification. Moreover, the childcare services offered by the Family Service, the day care centers, holiday and emergency care, make it easier to reconcile career and family.
With the Guidelines for Good Supervision of Doctoral Candidates at the University of Freiburg, the University takes responsibility for its researchers and establishes the framework for a successful supervisory relationship between doctoral candidates and supervisors. The guidelines serve to strengthen the university’s culture of supervision and ensure quality standards. They contain recommendations on how to make the supervision of doctoral candidates more rewarding for all parties involved. Additionally, they provide information on the legal framework of doctoral studies.
