Admission procedure as a doctoral candidate
After successfully completing the doctoral procedure, the Faculty of Economics and Behavioural Sciences awards the degrees Dr. rer. pol. in economics, as well as Dr. phil. or Dr. rer. nat. in the field of behavioural sciences. If you are interested in pursuing a doctorate, please contact our professors. Further information can be found on the websites of the respective departments.
The requirements for admission as a doctoral candidate are set out in the faculty’s doctoral regulations. Please check whether you meet these requirements before contacting a professor.
The following documents are required for acceptance:
- Conclusion of a written doctoral agreement with a professor of the faculty.

- If technical questions or problems arise, the Campus Management department is available via the hotline email address cmp@rz.uni-freiburg.de.
- Submit the DOC502 application digitally via HISinOne using the “submit” button.
Afterwards, the application is additionally printed and sent by post to the Dean’s Office.
Please include in paper form:
- Certified copies of the university entrance qualification and the bachelor’s and master’s certificates. For applicants without a degree from a German university, the corresponding certificates and transcripts (certified copies).
- The doctoral agreement with Appendix 1 and Appendix 2
- A short exposé/outline. Guidance can be found in the information sheet on preparing an exposé.
- Declaration that you are familiar with the current doctoral regulations of the Faculty of Economics and Behavioural Sciences
- A current CV outlining your professional and academic background, including nationality and address. For foreign applicants, where applicable, proof of sufficient proficiency in the language in which the dissertation is to be written.
- The form regarding any previous doctoral applications and the form indicating the intended use of the dissertation; this must include when, on what topic, and at which faculty or department the doctoral application was submitted. Where applicable, the reasons why the procedure was not completed must be stated, or an officially certified copy of the certificate of an already awarded doctoral degree must be provided.

- The application with its attachments will be reviewed. The Doctoral Committee decides on admission.
- Immediately upon receiving the admission notice, you must enroll at the Student Services Office of the Service Center for Studies. If you are employed full-time at the Albert Ludwig University, you may be exempted from the enrollment requirement. Instead, you must register as a doctoral candidate.
The dates for decisions by the Doctoral Committee:
April 1; July 1; September 1; and December 1 of each year. Please submit your documents to the Doctoral Committee at least two weeks before these dates.

Opening of the doctoral procedure: submission of the dissertation for review and application for the oral examination
The opening of the doctoral procedure requires that the doctoral candidate continues to meet the admission requirements specified in §5 of the doctoral regulations. The application to open the doctoral procedure (review of the dissertation and oral examination) must be submitted in writing to the Doctoral Committee.
- Submission of the dissertation for review
- After completing the doctorate, submit three printed and bound copies (note: spiral binding is not permitted) for review, as well as one additional electronic copy as a PDF file via email or on a suitable data carrier to andrea.friedrich@wvf.uni-freiburg.de.
- Please submit the completed application for the opening of the doctoral procedure together with the following forms:
- form for appointing the dissertation reviewers
- form for the oral examination
- form intended use of the dissertation
- form regarding any previous doctoral applications
- Affidavit
- either in person or by post to the Dean’s Office:

- Reviews and oral examination
- After both reviews have been received by the Dean’s Office, the dissertation is made available for inspection. This period lasts two weeks, or three weeks during the lecture-free period; after an additional week, the oral examination can take place.
- Access to the reviews is only possible upon request after the oral examination.

Mandatory copies
The print approval form must be submitted together with the mandatory copies to the Dean’s Office of the Faculty of Economics and Behavioural Sciences.
The following mandatory information must appear on the back of the inner title page in the reproduced copies:
Name of the Dean
Name of the first reviewer
Name of the second reviewer
Name of the primary supervisor
Name of the secondary supervisor
Date of the doctoral decision (oral examination)
After publication of the dissertation, three mandatory copies must be submitted free of charge to the Dean’s Office, and one (publisher/Freidok) or two (cumulative) mandatory copies to the University Library:
