Awarding and Recognition of Credits

Please check first whether the content of the curriculum or the areas of study at the vocational school overlap substantially with our course offerings in one of the five BOK course areas: Management, Communication, Media, IT, or Foreign Languages. If this is the case, please send us the following documents at zfs-info@zfs.uni-freiburg.de in digital form along with your student ID number:

• degree certificate from the vocational training course, stamped and signed
• all yearly progress reports from the vocational school, stamped and signed
• the curriculum of your training course for the vocational school indicating the competencies to be acquired, including information on the amount of instruction (contact hours), or the regulations of the vocational training programme with corresponding information on the course content and amount of instruction / out-of-class work

We check your documents for equivalence and issue a transfer recommendation to the examination office responsible for your degree programme; we inform you of our decision.

The examination committee makes the final decision on the transfer of your credit(s) on the basis of our recommendation.

How to proceed if you have earned credits at a higher education institution in Germany or abroad:

• Check on the basis of your programme curriculum which of the credits you earned could potentially be recognized for the BOK course area, the Digital Competencies Certificate, or the Sustainability Certificate.
• To do so, compare the course descriptions with the content of our courses.
• If you cannot identify any fundamental differences between our courses and your achievement(s), please send us the documents listed below to zfs-info@zfs.uni-freiburg.de along with your student ID number.

We check your documents and issue a recognition recommendation to the examination office responsible for your degree programme; we inform you of our decision.

The examination committee makes the final decision on the recognition of your credit(s) on the basis of our recommendation.

Are you planning a stay at a higher education institution abroad? The best course of action is to send us a list including descriptions of courses you wish to take at the university abroad that you assume are not fundamentally different from comparable courses in the BOK course area. We will gladly check beforehand whether the credits can be recognized if you participate successfully in the courses.

Practical experience – be it from an internship you have already completed, a job as a research assistant or another part-time job, or an honorary post – cannot be recognized as coursework for the BOK course area, for the Service Learning module, the Digital Competencies Certificate, or the Sustainability Certificate.

However, are you planning an optional internship of at least four weeks’ duration? If you complete it in the context of our ‘Internship Plus’ module, you can earn 6 or 8 ECTS credits.

If you would like to engage in volunteer work or continue volunteer work you are already engaged in, then we recommend that you participate in our ‘Service Learning’ module, where you can earn 4 or 6 ECTS credits.

If you change your bachelor’s degree programme and have already earned credits with us in the BOK course area, you can generally have them recognized for your new degree programme. You can either contact the examination office responsible for your degree programme directly or send us your BOK transcript.

We will issue a recognition recommendation to the examination office responsible for your degree programme. The examination office makes the final decision of the recognition of your credit(s) on the basis of our recommendation.
