Analyzing the core concept of sustainability: An interdisciplinary approach combining cognitive affective mapping and philosophical reflection
While theoretical debates about an appropriate understanding of sustainability are ongoing in a number of academic disciplines, we surprisingly know very little about how „lay people“ and scientists who are not actively engaged in these debates conceptualize sustainability. Therefore, in my research project we investigate people’s conceptualization or mental models of sustainability with different methods like Cognitive-Affective Maps and questionnaires. The goal is to gain a picture of which aspects of sustainability are common ground and which aspects might be contested. At the same time we aim to reflect implications e.g., for science communication and transdisciplinarity.
