The THE World University Rankings are based on 18 indicators from five areas: teaching, research environment, research quality, industry and international outlook. To calculate the rankings, statistical data submitted by the universities themselves, bibliometric data from Elsevier and data from a reputation survey of scientists conducted by THE are taken into account.

Particularly noteworthy are the excellent results of the University of Freiburg in the industry category. As in the previous year, it achieved the highest score of 100 points here and, together with several universities worldwide, ranks first in this category. The category includes the indicators research revenue from industry and patents.
