FAQs M.A Programme
Information about the programme structure, a study plan, and details on grade weighting can be found in the Examination Regulations. Further information on the programme structure, including details on modules, is available in the module handbook.
Information on courses is available on HISinOne. Select a course and click on the title to see the description, requirements, frequency of offerings, and more.
During your studies, you will encounter various types of courses: lectures, exercises, tutorials, seminars, and colloquia.
Colloquia offer a platform to learn about others’ research or to present your own research, such as a linguistic project or the draft/status of your Master’s thesis.
Lectures present the current state of research in a linguistic field, providing you with a comprehensive overview of a topic.
Exercises introduce research methods and provide tasks for practice.
Tutorials involve guided self-study, where you independently work on a specific topic using a reading list provided by the lecturer.
Seminars involve intensive discussion of selected topics; classroom discussions are central to this format.
There are graded and ungraded examinations. A graded examination (Prüfungsleistung, PL) is marked with red and gold badges in HISinOne. An ungraded examination (Studienleistung, SL) is marked with blue and silver badges.
The grade you receive for a PL in a module counts towards your overall module grade.
Courses with graded examinations usually also include ungraded requirements, such as attendance, a small project, a presentation, or similar, which must be fulfilled to be admitted to the exam.
ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) credits are awarded when you pass a course. They influence the weight of your grade (for graded courses).
Modules in research methods and practice, as well as supplementary modules, include elective courses. Unlike the compulsory courses you must take, you can choose from all electives within a module. The number you should choose can be seen in HISinOne. You can also calculate the sum of ECTS credits for your chosen courses within a module to ensure you meet the required total.
In supplementary modules, you may choose courses from any specialisation, including your own. However, one of the two supplementary modules must be completed in a specialisation other than your own. You may also take both modules in a different specialisation from your own.
Although both supplementary modules have the same ECTS credit value, suggesting equal contribution to your overall grade, this is not the case. According to the Examination Regulations, Supplementary Module 1 counts double towards your overall grade, while Supplementary Module 2 counts once. If you want to take a course from your own specialisation as part of the supplementary modules, we recommend choosing Supplementary Module 1 for this.
Details on how your overall grade is calculated can be found in the Examination Regulations.
