GLYMCE – Advancing Glycomaterials to Combat Infections
GLYMCE is a cutting-edge research initiative exploring the powerful role of carbohydrates—specifically sulfated glycosaminoglycans (GAGs)—in health and disease. These complex sugars, abundant on cell surfaces, are critical in mediating biological interactions, including the attachment of pathogens during infection.
The project focuses on developing innovative glycomaterials—synthetic constructs decorated with carbohydrate motifs—to better understand and influence these interactions. By combining expertise in polymer chemistry and glycobiology, GLYMCE aims to create highly controlled, effective glycomaterials capable of mimicking or blocking natural carbohydrate functions.
Through this interdisciplinary approach, GLYMCE seeks to uncover new strategies for preventing and treating viral and bacterial infections, with a particular emphasis on addressing public health challenges such as those posed by SARS-CoV-2. The project also contributes to broader applications of carbohydrate-based technologies, from drug development to advanced biomaterials.
