Tenure Track CRIION Professorship for
Bioinformatics – AI for Oncology Research
This chair headed by CRIION Jun.-Prof. Dr. Maria Kalweit is part of the Department of Computer Science of the University of Freiburg and the Collaborative Research Institute Intelligent Oncology (CRIION) . We seek to develop trustworthy, efficient, explainable, and accessible AI systems for oncology. We work on the full pipeline from diagnosis to treatment optimization: detecting and classifying cells types and states across scales, modeling disease and therapy-driven transitions, predicting response dynamics and designing methods for treatment optimization. By integrating machine learning paradigms such as supervised, unsupervised, and reinforcement learning, and through close collaboration with clinicians, biologists and engineers, we aim to make AI reliable, transparent, and applicable in real-world cancer care.
The TT-W1 professorship is funded by the Mertelsmann Foundation gGmbH.

Teaching
We offer applied and fundamental courses, as well as theses and projects, all tailored to the challenges of medical data.
Research
Our research priorities focus on robust, explainable, and data-efficient AI, with current projects addressing oncological applications.
Publications
We publish our findings in leading journals and conferences, covering robust, explainable, and data-efficient AI with a strong focus on oncology applications.
