About
The library of the Department of Ancient History is situated on the second floor of KG I (rooms 1287–1294). With 44 desks, it provides a comfortable learning environment across multiple rooms. Additionally, two group desks are available, ideal for preparing presentations, exams, and collaborative study sessions.
The Separatum (room 1294) serves as the library’s service centre and houses its most essential volumes. Here, student assistants can help you navigate the library and assist with seminar-related inquiries. Please note that the Separatum operates under different opening hours than the main library.
Most books are accessible during regular opening hours. However, books labeled ‘Separatum’ are located in room 1294, where you will also find the Semesterapparate, compiled by docents to support seminars and tutorials.
Besides the Separatum holdings, books classified under the shelfmark F (numismatics) are stored separately. Additionally, books with W shelfmarks are housed in the Walser Library instead of the main library rooms. If you need books from these collections, please contact the Separatum during its opening hours.
A floor plan of the library, along with an overview of its holdings and classification system, is available on the University Library’s website.
Loaning out books
The library operates primarily as a reference collection, meaning books can only be borrowed under exceptional circumstances with a library card. These exceptions include:
- Weekend loans. Since the library is closed on weekends, books can be borrowed on Fridays and must be returned by Monday, 4:00 pm.
- Separatum collection. Given the Separatum’s limited access (only two hours per day), books from this collection can be borrowed for seven days. A one-time extension of three days (loan period of ten days total) can be granted after a request via e-mail.
- Accessibility. If you are unable to use the library independently, books may be borrowed for up to 14 days.
Books can only be checked out during the Separatum’s opening hours (3:00–5:00 pm).
Accessibility
Access
The library is accessible via the large lift between KG I and KG III. Unfortunately, the rooms within the library are not suitable for wheelchairs.
Use of Library Collections
The use of ladders is required to access most of the library’s collections. If this presents a challenge, please visit the Separatum in person or contact us via e-mail for assistance. If you want to use the library premises with a wheelchair, the group desks are available. The nearest wheelchair-accessible toilet is located on the 4th floor of KG III and can be reached via the same lift.
Assistance
We are happy to prepare the books you require so they can be collected from the Separatum for loan or on-site reading. To facilitate access, the loan period for all books will be extended to 14 days, ensuring that you have access to all necessary resources for your studies.
