Research

Researchers in the Department of Ancient History explore the entire temporal spectrum of antiquity. Their work is shaped by interdisciplinary collaboration and multiperspectivity approaches. Key areas of focus include comparative history of empires, questions of temporality, and global-historical methods.

Particular research interests lie in the political and administrative history of the Roman Empire and Late Antiquity (Prof. Dr. Peter Eich), the economic history of Ptolemaic Egypt and transeurasian exchange (Prof. Dr. Sitta von Reden), and Greek economic and social history (apl. Prof. Dr. Astrid Möller). In addition, historiographical and regional studies approaches play a crucial role in the department’s work.

Numerous projects of the Department of Ancient History have received, and continue to receive, external funding, which offers unique opportunities to researchers to start or advance their careers.

The department maintains strong international connections through various research collaborations. A notable example is the Collegium Beatus Rhenanus, which fosters cross-border academic exchange and facilitates joint research projects, particularly aimed at supporting young scholars.
