Structure of the B.Sc. Biology

The course of studies in biology in Freiburg provides a sound biologic-scientific training with a very wide range of subjects thematically and the attractive possibility of specialization.

Basic modules (biology):

The general basic biological knowledge of the entire spectrum of biology are taught in basic modules in the 1st to 4th semester.

  • Cell Biology
  • Genetics and Molecular Biology
  • Botany and Evolution of Plants
  • Zoology and Evolution of Animals
  • Plant Physiology
  • Animal Physiology
  • Scientific Theory and Ethics
  • Microbiology, Immunobiology and Biochemistry
  • Developmental Biology
  • Ecology
  • Statistics

Basic modules (natural sciences):

The chemical, physical and mathematical principles that are essential for studying and practicing in biology, are offered in basic modules in the first three semesters and are obligatory for all students in the Bachelor’s degree program.

  • Introductory and Inorganic Chemistry
  • Organic Chemistry
  • Physical chemistry
  • Physics I + II
  • Mathematics I + II

Profile modules from the range of biology, for example, special methods modules provide the opportunity to built an own profile. For an interdisciplinary orientation profile modules are available from the curriculum of other faculties, such as humanities, earth sciences, forestry and environmental sciences, medicine, economics, physics or psychology as elective modules to choose from. Additional transferrable skills are taught both in-house as well as in events organized by the Centre for Key Qualifications (ZfS) and are part of the compulsory program.

The third year serves orientation and scientific deepening as well as focussing in a biological field in preparation for the Bachelor thesis. For this purpose, in the 5th semester from a total of 15 specialization modules which reflects the entire width of the research environment of the faculty of biology in Freiburg, three modules are to be selected. The later thesis shall be written in one of these three fields.

Offered specialization modules:

  • Biochemistry – Synthetic Biology and Proteomics
  • Developmental Biology
  • Eukaryotes Genetics
  • Evolutionary Ecology
  • Functional morphology, biomechanics and biomimetics
  • Genetics
  • Geobotany
  • Immunology
  • Limnology
  • Microbiology
  • Molecular plant physiology
  • Neurobiology
  • Plant biotechnology
  • Animal- and Neurophysiology
  • Cell biology

In the 6th semester the Bachelor thesis is preceded by a project module, in which students  acquire the practical skills that are necessary for the implementation of the bachelor thesis in the laboratory or in the field. In an accompanying literature seminar, the theoretical background of the thesis will be acquired on the basis of recent scientific papers. The within a period of three months the thesis is to be prepared in one of the specialization areas and concluded by the final colloquium after 3 years of study in total.

The courses are lectures, practicals, field trips, exercises and seminars and are grouped into modules. The course contents of each module are examined during studies. The modules are assigned according to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) credit points (CP), the students acquire for successful completion. This facilitate the mutual recognition in the European educational space.
