Information on scientific work
We offer supervision for Bachelor’s, Master’s and external theses on the following topics.
Subject areas
- We offer a wide range of flexibility in the topics and methodology for theses, as long as these are within the area of expertise of the chair and good supervision is possible. These can be conceptual or empirical.
- Empirical theses can use both qualitative and quantitative methods. However, our focus is on quantitative methods, which means that we can offer particularly comprehensive methodological support here.
- Recommendations for Master’s theses: For Master’s theses, we particularly recommend the use of quantitative methods of network analysis or statistical evaluation of existing literature, such as a meta-analysis, due to the focus of the Chair.
- Thematically, our expertise is concentrated in the areas of corporate management, organization and human resources – with a particular emphasis on issues that are dealt with using social network analysis. In-depth supervision can be provided in particular in the fields of personnel and organizational development, work and organizational psychology, strategic management and corporate governance. Potential topics for theses should be related to at least one of these areas. To give you an idea of possible topics, we have compiled a short (non-exhaustive) list:
- Employee well-being and employee satisfaction
- Stress and mental health
- Network formation and changes (intra- or inter-organizational)
- Knowledge exchange, communication, cooperation and interactions (intra- and inter-organizational)
- Interdependencies between informal communication and formal organizational structures
- …
These topics are just a few examples and we are open to many other ideas that fit into this area.
Please note our “Notes on scientific work”.
- Application deadlines: 01.03. and 01.09. by 12:00 noon each day
- Application: Interested students must submit the application form and their current transcript of records to the Chair of Organization and Human Resources by the specified deadline (by e-mail or post). Late applications cannot be considered.
- Allocation of places: The limited number of places are allocated in March or September, which usually takes a few weeks due to acceptances/rejections. If there are more applications than places available, students are selected according to their own initiative in choosing a topic and according to their study focus/grades.
- Supervision: Supervision takes place in groups on fixed dates with a seminar character; the thesis seminar always begins at the start of the lecture period. The thesis seminar includes an introduction to finding a topic, searching for literature, the structure and format of an academic thesis and the preparation of interim presentations. No supervision is offered outside of this format. For this reason, we kindly ask you to refrain from requesting personal interviews to find a topic, as we are currently unable to schedule this due to the large number of students.
- Topics and methodology are flexible as long as they are within the area of our competence, you will find further information on this at the top of this page.
- Final presentation: From the summer semester 2025, a final presentation will be an integral part of the Bachelor’s thesis process. In this presentation, students present their results and answer questions. The presentation is an important part of the degree and takes place at the end of the processing period, probably as part of group presentations.
- Application deadlines: 01.03. and 01.09. by 12:00 noon each day
- Application: Please submit the application form, a current transcript of records and a short synopsis (maximum 1 page) to the Chair of Organization and Human Resources (by e-mail). Late applications cannot be considered. If you would like a personal interview before applying, you can contact potential supervisors directly or send an email to our office.
- Allocation of places: As we regularly receive more inquiries than available childcare places, we base our selection primarily on participation in our seminars.
Participation in the seminar “New Impulses in Personnel and Organizational Research” (master seminar) is considered particularly positively. In addition, your own initiative in presenting the topic, your main areas of study and your grades will also be considered in the decision. - Topics and methodology are flexible as long as they are within the area of our competence, you will find further information on this at the top of this page. Empirical work is generally preferred, and cooperation with external partners (e.g. companies) is possible.
- Final presentation: From summer semester 2025, a final presentation is an integral part of the Master’s thesis process. In this presentation, students present their results and answer questions. The presentation is an important part of the degree and takes place at the end of the processing period.
In general, we are open to supervising Master’s theses in cooperation with organizations (such as companies). Some important things should be considered:
- You should have already selected a specific organization and ideally already be in contact with it, e.g. through a previous internship or similar.
- In general, it is important to start planning as early as possible due to the increased coordination effort involved in cooperation.
- Theses usually have a higher practical relevance, but a scientific question is still essential. Topics without scientific reference, such as the preparation of a business plan, are not possible.
If you are interested, please contact us and ask for a preliminary discussion. Please contact our secretariat (organisation@cm.uni-freiburg.de) to request an appointment.
