Welcome to the Department of Economic Theory
We combine rigorous economic analysis with advanced mathematical modeling and numerical simulation methods to address some of the most pressing issues of our time. From climate change and financial market dynamics to the design of optimal fiscal policy, our research tackles complex, real-world challenges.
Our teaching mission is to equip students with the tools to explore both timeless questions and contemporary problems, and to contribute meaningfully—whether through academic research or informed advice to policymakers.
2025 | Yves Schmider Wins Award for Master Thesis— Congratulations!

We are beyond excited to announce that Yves Schmider, one of our recent master students, has been honored with the distinguished Karl Brandt-Preis for his master thesis “How does uncertainty in climate damages and social discount rates affect optimal climate policy?”. The prize recognizes outstanding contributions in the field of economic theory. The award committee commended the thesis for its innovative approach, strong analytical framework, and meaningful insights into key questions in modern economic thought. Congratulations, Yves- we are very proud of you!
2025 | 40th EEA Annual Congress in Bordeaux, France

From August 25th to 29th, Marius Jäger participated in the 40th EEA annual congress held in Bordeaux, France and presented his paper “America First? – The macroeconomic effects of punitive tariffs”. (joint work with colleagues from the Bundesbank)

2025 | Conference on Optimal Control and Dynamic Games

From July 15 to 18, Marten Hillebrand participated in the 16th Viennese Conference on Optimal Control and Dynamic Games held at TU Wien and presented his paper “International Climate Policy and Risk Sharing”. (joint work with team member Markus Epp)

From July 7th to 9th, Marius Jäger participate 31st CEF conference held at University of Chile in Santiago, Chile and presented his paper “America First? – The macroeconomic effects of punitive tariffs”. (joint work with the Bundesbank)
2025 | Teaching Award for “Advanced Macroeconomics I”

We are thrilled to announce that the lecture Advanced Macroeconomics I from the winter semester 24/25 has been awarded the “Best Compulsory Lecture in the Master of Economics Program” by the Student Board (Fachschaft WiWi) in recognition of its outstanding teaching quality. The award ceremony was held on June 26 and attended by faculty members and students. In his acceptance speech, Professor Hillebrand thanked the award committee for this honor and acknowledged the hard work and dedication of the Student Board and all students at the University of Freiburg.
2025 | Workshop “Macroeconomic Perspectives on Climate Change”

On May 23, the Macro chair hosted a workshop on “Macroeconomic Perspectives on Climate Change” that brought together leading scholars working in the field to present their research and discuss ideas. 2025 | Team members at Freiburg RED 2025

On May 20, team members Marten Hillebrand, Markus Epp, and Marius Jäger participated in the Freiburg Renewable Energy Day 2025 conference where they presented posters on their current research on Climate Change and International Risk Sharing and Cap and Trade versus Tradable Performance Standard. Organized by the Center for Renewable Energy (ZEE) at the University of Freiburg, the event brought together scholars working in the field of energy and the environment for a day of inspiring discussions and knowledge exchange.
The conference kicked off with an outstanding plenary talk by Prof. Andreas Löschel (Ruhr-University Bochum) that set the tone for the entire event—thought-provoking, engaging, and filled with interesting insights. The poster session was equally impressive, showcasing a wide range of innovative research and fostering lively conversations among participants. Special thanks to Prof. Moritz Diehl and his team for the excellent organization – the seamless coordination and thoughtful planning made the RED Conference a truly memorable experience for all attendees.
2025 | Acyclical tutorials Advanced Macro 1
The acyclical tutorial sessions for Advanced Macro 1 will take place every Tuesday 10am-12pm in room HS 3044. The tutorial exercises from the WS will be discussed, together with any questions the students have regarding the course material.
2025 | Research visit to Tilburg University

As part of his sabbatical term, Marten Hillebrand spent the entire April as a research visitor at Tilburg University. During his stay, he also gave a research talk presenting the paper “International Climate Policy and Risk Sharing” (joint work with Markus Epp). He would like to thank the Department of Econometrics & Operations Research at Tilburg for the wonderful opportunity to discuss research ideas and the potential for future cooperation and collaboration in a most stimulating academic environment. The exchange of ideas and feedback notably on the economics of climate change was immensely valuable and will contribute significantly to our ongoing and future research agenda.

2025 | Research Talk by Dr. Ken Suzuki
We are very happy to welcome Dr. Ken Suzuki from Clark University for another visit at the Chair of Macroeconomics. On Tuesday, March 4, Ken will give his paper “Trade Costs and Spatial Distribution of Chinese Manufacturing Firms: A Quantitative Analysis” (joint work with Zeyi Qian and Junfu Zhang) in the Tea-time Macro seminar.
The talk takes place in room R 02 012. Everybody interested is welcome to join us!
2024 | Research on Climate Change: Working paper updated

A revised version of the working paper “Win as a Team or Fail as Individuals: Cooperation and Non-Cooperation in the Climate Tax Game” by Marten Hillebrand is now available. The paper derives optimal policies in a multi-region model of climate change under different scenarios of cooperation and coalitions formation. It also studies transfer policies under which regions have an incentive to cooperate and choose a uniform global carbon tax. The manuscript can be downloaded here.

On September 26, Marten Hillebrand participated in a workshop on “Climate Change: Global Risks and Cooperation” hosted by Oslo Business School at OsloMet University. He would like to thank the organizers Svenn Jensen and Christian Traeger for hosting a fantastic event with great talks and stimulating discussions in the beautiful city of Olso!

2024 | Third Chair Research Day
On July 24-25, the chair hosted its annual “Chair Research Day” where the core members of the team joined by external researchers present and discuss their latest research. This year, we were thrilled to be joined by Dr. Natascha Hinterlang from the Bundesbank and Anastasia Epp from the University of Cologne. The conference program can be found here. On May 2 and 3, Marten Hillebrand participated in the 27th Conference on “Theories and Methods in Macroeconomics” T2M at the University of Amsterdam and presented his paper “Win as a Team or Fail as Individuals – Cooperation and Non-Cooperation in the Climate Tax Game”
2024 | Research Visit and Workshop at Fulbright University Vietnam

From March 18 to 27, Marten Hillebrand and Marius Jäger went for a research visit to Vietnam to attend a workshop on “Institutions, Inequality, Climate Change, and Migration” organized jointly by Fulbright University and the World Bank. During their visit, they also had the privilege of engaging with local researchers and Marten Hillebrand gave a lecture on “Macroeconomic Models of Climate Change and Optimal Climate Policy” attended by students at Fulbright University.
Overall, the research visit and workshop in Vietnam were immensely rewarding experiences and the knowledge and insights gained will contribute positively to our ongoing projects and initiatives on the economics of climate change. We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to our hosts in Vietnam for their warm hospitality and generous support throughout our visit. Their kindness and hospitality made our stay memorable, and we are truly grateful for the opportunity to engage with the local research group and experience the beauty of Vietnam.
