Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Lars P. Feld

Lars P. Feld (born 1966) has held the Chair of Economic Policy and Constitutional Economics at the University of Freiburg since 2010 and is Director of the Walter Eucken Institute. His research focuses on economic policy, public finance, new political economy, and economic analysis of law.

After studying economics at Saarland University, Lars P. Feld received his doctorate from the University of St. Gallen in 1999 and habilitated there in 2002. From 2002 to 2006, he was Professor of Economics, specializing in public finance, at Philipps University of Marburg; and from 2006 to 2010 he held the same chair at Heidelberg University. Lars P. Feld is a member of the Leopoldina (German National Academy of Sciences), the Kronberger Kreis, and the Mont Pèlerin Society. In November 2017, Lars P. Feld received an honorary doctorate from the University of Lucerne. He is the recipient of the Gustav Stolper Prize (2021) from the Verein für Socialpolitik, which is considered the most important award for economists in the German-speaking world. In 2023, Lars P. Feld was awarded the University Medal of the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg and the Friedrich List Medal of the Federal Association of German Economists and Business Administrators (bdvb).

Lars P. Feld has been a member of the Scientific Advisory Board at the Federal Ministry of Finance since 2003. In 2007, he was appointed as an expert for the Bundestag and Bundesrat Commission on the Modernization of Federal-State Financial Relations (Federalism Commission II) and acted in an advisory capacity on the new German debt brake. In January 2020, he was appointed as a scientific member of the Mindestlohnkommission. From 2011 to 2021, he was a member and, in the final year, chairman of the German Council of Economic Experts, representing it on the Independent Advisory Board of the Stability Council from 2013 to 2021. From February 2022 to November 2024, Lars P. Feld was “Personal Representative of the Federal Minister of Finance for Macroeconomic Development.”
