Language	Usually in German. Compulsory elective modules can be in German or English. A good command of German and English is therefore an absolute prerequisite for successful study.

The Master of Education will be newly established in the 2018/19 winter semester. As a consecutive Master’s degree course leading to a polyvalent 2-subject Bachelor’s degree, this combination replaces the previous state examination.

The Master of Education in Economics is the second part of teacher training for the grammar school teaching profession. The completion of this Master’s degree qualifies students for the preparatory service. Studying economics at the University of Freiburg prepares students for the school subject “Economics, Career and Study Orientation (WBS)” at general secondary schools. It is not a business education course. The degree therefore does not provide access to the preparatory service at vocational schools or to the subjects of the business profiles at vocational schools.

Study objectives and programme content

In contrast to the polyvalent Bachelor’s degree, which has a high proportion of subject-related subjects, the focus of the Master’s degree in Teacher Education at the University of Freiburg is on educational science topics. While this comprises 35 ECTS credits, 17 ECTS credits are allocated to subject-specific science and 10 ECTS credits to subject-specific didactics in each of the two subjects.

One focus of the Master of Education in Economics is on linking the three areas of subject-specific science, subject-specific didactics and educational science. Students should experience a coherent course of study that prepares them for professional practice, which also closely interlinks the three areas.
For economics, for example, this means that economic models and theories are treated controversially and that this controversy is addressed and reflected upon in didactic courses. The Master of Education enables prospective teachers to also address this controversy in the classroom and enter into discourse with students.

The design of the curriculum is based on the standards of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the State Baden-Württemberg. Both subject-specific and didactic content as well as cross-sectional skills such as digitalization and media skills are taken into account.

Information for already enrolled students

The registration period for regular lectures and tutorials starts on 1 April for the summer semester and on 1 September for the winter semester.

The registration deadlines for seminars are excluded from this and should be requested directly from the respective chairs.

Please note that lectures and tutorials must be registered for in HISinOne via the study planner from the summer semester 2020. Registering for the course is not an examination registration; if you wish to take the examination, you must register for the examination within the examination registration period!

Admission requirements

The Master of Education in Economics follows on consecutively from the polyvalent two-major subject Bachelor’s degree with teacher training option.

Excerpt from the admission regulations:

(1) Admission to the Master of Education degree program for the teaching degree Gymnasium in Economics is granted to students who

has obtained a first degree at a German university in a teaching-related Bachelor’s degree course for a type of teaching profession in the framework agreements of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs in the subject of Economics or in an equivalent course of at least three years at a German or foreign university and
has knowledge of the German language that corresponds to at least level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

(2) If an applicant does not have a teaching-related first degree in accordance with paragraph 1 no. 1, he/she may exceptionally be admitted to the Master of Education study program for the teaching degree Gymnasium in Economics if he/she has obtained a first degree in a Bachelor’s degree program at a German university or in an equivalent degree program of at least three years at a German or foreign university, which includes subject-specific and subject-didactic study components in Economics and another subject listed in § 6 paragraph 5 RahmenVO-KM, educational science study components and practical school studies; Any missing subject-specific qualifications and practical school studies must not exceed a total of 50 ECTS credits and must be completed by the time of registration for the Master’s thesis.

(3) The provisions of the study and examination regulations of the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg for the Master of Education degree program for the teaching degree Gymnasium regarding the acquisition of missing competencies and the catching up of courses from the Bachelor’s degree program remain unaffected.

Application

Applications for the Master of Education in all subject areas are made centrally via the Student Secretariat of the Service Center Studies (SCS). The application period is from June 1 to July 15. Unfortunately, applications received after this deadline cannot be considered.

Application portal

The following documents are required for the application:

an officially certified copy of the certificate of the first university degree according to § 2 paragraph 1 no. 1 or § 2 paragraph 2,
a meaningful overview of the content of all study and examination achievements of the first university degree in accordance with § 2 paragraph 1 no. 1 or § 2 paragraph 2 (overview of achievements/transcript of records) in an officially certified copy and
a certified copy of suitable proof of sufficient language skills in accordance with Section 2 (1) No. 2. Proof of sufficient language skills in German (sentence 3 no. 3) is a German certificate of general higher education entrance qualification or a relevant subject-restricted higher education entrance qualification. If the documents required in accordance with sentence 3 no. 1 to 3 are not written in German, English or French, an officially certified translation in German or English is required.
