ShanghaiRanking: University of Freiburg places highly again

Fifth place nationally, among the best 101-150 universities internationally from a total 2500: once again the University of Freiburg has achieved very good results in the prestigious ranking.

In the latest Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), also known as ShanghaiRanking, the University of Freiburg holds fifth place among the 51 German institutions that are included in the listing. It has retained its position from the previous year both nationally and internationally, and remains among the 101-150 best from a total 2500 universities listed worldwide.

Set against other German universities, the University of Freiburg managed to score particularly highly on the number of alumni and staff with Nobel prizes and Fields Medals (Awards), highly cited researchers (HiCi), papers published in Nature and Science (N&S) and the per capita academic performance (PCP). In each of these indicators it took fifth place in Germany.

About the ShanghaiRanking

First published in 2003, the ShanghaiRanking is one of the world’s oldest and most renowned academic ranking lists. Since 2009 the ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, an independent organisation specialising in higher education intelligence, has published the list annually. Today, the ranking compares over 2,500 universities worldwide and publishes the results for the best 1,000.

The ranking compares universities using six indicators: alumni and staff with Nobel prizes and Fields Medals (Alumni and Award indicators), number of highly cited researchers in accordance with Clarivate’s Highly Cited Researchers ranking (HiCi), number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science (N&S), articles that are indexed in the Science Citation Index Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index (PUB) and academic performance per capita (PCP). The latter gives weighted scores for the other five indicators, divided by the number of full-time equivalent academic staff.
