It supports study, teaching and research at the University of Freiburg by providing literature, media and specialised academic information in line with requirements, promotes information and media skills as a teaching library through tailored training courses and lectures and offers FreiDok plus, an innovative repository for the publication of research literature and research data in open access.

As a hybrid library, the University Library offers attractive teaching, learning and research spaces in a state-of-the-art building on the historic campus on the university square in the centre of Freiburg, while also providing access to digital libraries and scientific information worldwide as a virtual library.

Specialised academic libraries and portals

As a lending library, the University Library is embedded in the system of specialised academic libraries, which provide research literature and resources in reference libraries in direct connection with seminars, institutes and faculties. In addition, the University Library (UB) directly reflects the subject profile of the University of Freiburg in a differentiated system of subject areas. The subject librarians are happy to support your individual teaching needs.

Treasure trove of European writing culture

Thanks to its rich history, which goes back to the year the University was founded in 1457, the University Library has particularly valuable historical collections: late antique papyri of various provenance, medieval and modern manuscripts from former monastery property, incunabula from the most important printing centres of the early Gutenberg period, early prints from the era of humanism, which was not only important for the intellectual culture of the universities on the Upper Rhine. The University Library’s Digitisation Centre has been systematically digitising this extremely rich written cultural heritage for years and presenting it to academics and the public in local, regional, national and international cultural portals and digital libraries.
