About the Ranking

Clarivate Analytics has been honouring the Highly Cited Researchers annually since 2001 and is considered an important indicator of the influence of scientists and their publications. The ranking is based on an evaluation of the most frequently cited papers in the Web of Science literature database, as well as on qualitative analyses conducted by experts from the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI)™ at Clarivate. The ranking includes authors of research papers that are among the most cited 1% in their field and year of publication in the Web of Science citation index over the last ten years. In 2024, papers published and cited between January 2013 and December 2023 were considered.

The ranking lists a total of 6,636 individual researchers from 59 countries and regions. This year, a few exceptional figures have been honoured in multiple research fields, meaning that a total of 6,886 Highly Cited Researcher awards have been given to 6,636 individuals.
