Maternity protection and studying with children
Maternity protection during pregnancy, after childbirth, and while breastfeeding
Since 2018, the Maternity Protection Act (MuSchG) has applied not only to female employees but also, for example, to students who are required to attend a course or take an examination at the University at a fixed place and time or who must complete an internship as part of their course of study. Moreover, in accordance with Section 1(4) MuSchG, the provisions of the Act now apply to anyone who is pregnant, has given birth, or is breastfeeding.
The Act aims to protect the health of the student and their child at the place of studies during pregnancy, after childbirth, and while breastfeeding. The Act also seeks to prevent any disadvantages or discrimination that might arise during these periods.
According to Section 15 of the Act, a student is to inform the University of their pregnancy and the expected date of delivery as soon as they know they are pregnant. Likewise, a breastfeeding student should promptly inform the University that they are breastfeeding. Here you will find the form for notification of pregnancy or breastfeeding. Further information is available further down this page.
Pregnant students can apply for a leave of absence due to pregnancy six weeks before their due date.
A leave of absence due to maternity protection / parental leave can be applied for every semester until the child reaches the age of three.
