Baden-Württemberg State Research Prize Goes to Freiburg Plant Ecophysiologist Christiane Werner

Werner will receive the most highly endowed state research prize for her basic research on the plant stress physiology

Porträt Christiane Werner

Prof. Dr Christiane Werner is one of this year’s winners of the Baden-Württemberg State Research Prize. The Professor of Ecosystem Physiology at the Faculty of Environment and Natural Resources at the University of Freiburg will receive the most highly endowed research prize of any federal state in recognition of her scientific achievements in basic research in the field of plant stress physiology. The prize is endowed with 100,000 euros. A selection committee chaired by the President of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities justified the decision in favour of Werner as follows: “Christiane Werner is regarded as one of the most innovative scientists in her field, whose research significantly improves our understanding of plant stress physiology and enables the development of strategies to improve the resilience of ecosystems to increasingly extreme conditions.”

Science Minister Petra Olschowski will present the Baden-Württemberg 2024 State Research Prize in October. “I am particularly pleased that we are honouring three women this year for their outstanding research work: Prof. Dr Christiane Werner, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Lena Maier-Hein and Prof. Dr Kira Rehfeld have gained insights with their research that are highly relevant for medical research and for direct clinical applications as well as for improving the resilience of ecosystems and for climate research,” says Olschowski.

Baden-Württemberg State Research Prize

Every two years since 1989, the State Research Prize has honoured outstanding scientific achievements in all disciplines, from biology to philology and finance. As the most highly endowed research prize in a federal state, it is awarded to one researcher from basic research and one from applied research. The State Research Prize is decided by an interdisciplinary jury made up of renowned scientists.
