CWTS Leiden Rankings: University of Freiburg ranks 11th nationwide in number of publications

In the research field “Biomedical and Health Sciences,” the University of Freiburg ranks 6th in the total number of publications.

The Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS) at Leiden University in the Netherlands has published the results of the University Ranking 2024. The ranking compares universities worldwide based on published papers and reviews from the period 2019 to 2022.

The University of Freiburg ranks 11th in Germany for the total number of publications. The ranking also measures the number of Freiburg publications that are among the top 1% of the most frequently cited publications within a subject area in Germany. Freiburg ranks 6th across all disciplines and 10th in terms of its share of all publications. 85.9% of the University of Freiburg’s researchers published with partners from other research institutions or industry during the period analysed. The proportion of open access publications is more than 76%.

Research areas at the University of Freiburg in a national comparison

Freiburg University is ranked 6th in the “Biomedical and Health Sciences” research area in terms of the total number of publications. In terms of the top 10%, top 5% and top 1% of the most cited publications, it is ranked between 2nd and 6th in this area. In terms of the number of collaborative, international and open access publications, it is ranked 8th in this area.

The “Life and Earth Sciences” at the University of Freiburg took 9th place in the top 10% of the most cited publications.

In the research area “Mathematics and Computer Sciences,” the University of Freiburg is also in the top 10 (4th place) for the proportion of publications with an industry collaboration.

The CWTS Leiden Ranking

The Leiden Ranking compares 1,506 universities from 73 countries worldwide in five scientific fields and evaluates scientific publications based on four quantitative and qualitative indicators: scientific impact, collaboration with other institutions, Open Access and gender. Among other things, the number of publications, their citation frequency and co-authorships are recorded. The “Web of Science” database serves as the source for the publication and citation data.
